ring pro: mechanical chime going off randomly

I installed a ring pro a couple of days ago and everything was fine for about 24 hours until last night, the mechanical chime went off when we were sleeping.

Then, within seconds, it happened again. I opened the ring app on my phone to see who was at the door and there was nobody. There was no notification from the ring app either on anyone being outside or even any motion activity. This kept happening after that.

I reviewed footage going back two hours and there was no activity at the door. I came down to inspect the chime and there was a loud buzzing sound coming from it. Since it was late, I turned off the power to the chime and to the ring from the circuit breaker.

Our chime is a Mechanical Nutone one with four terminals on it: COMM, TRANS, 1 NOTE, and 2 NOTE. The power pack is connected across COMM and 1 NOTE.

If anyone else had the same problem, please let me know a solution if you found one.



Hey @johngalt. If possible, can you disconnect the Doorbell from the wires and touch the wires together to see if your internal chime kit rings? Additionally, there’s a large number of NuTone mechanical chimes that are compatible with the Pro. Can you check the list here and let me know which model your chime kit is? It’s possible it may not be one of the compatible ones, which could cause a concern like this as well.

Yes, the chime is working fine if I connect the wires at the doorbell directly.

My nutone chime model is 143A67F, which is in neither of your compatibile or incompatible list.

@johngalt Since the chime kit is not listed in the compatible list, it is possible that it is compatible to some degree. Typically with chime kits that we haven’t verified as compatible, they may work or they may not work but we can’t guarantee the performance.

I would recommend reaching out to our support team at one of the numbers availablehere. They can take a closer look at the wiring and the chime kit itself to determine if it should be replaced with a compatible chime kit.
