Ring doorbell not charging

Have good luck with my ring doorbell till the battery went down to 3%, I've got it hardwired so I took it off and charged it up full, now I have it back up and working but it's not holding the charge what is my problem?

My Ring's battery (not hardwired) suddenly started to drain about 15% per day. I had never experienced such problems before. To recharge it, I must drive over 2 hours and wait until it charges. Terrible security device. The last time the battery refused to even take a charge. Even when plugged in it stayed at 1%, critically low. Unfortunately, I think I may have fallen for this scam. I bought a Ring Doorbell 2 believing that my original device's battery had merely worn out. (I'm in balmy SoCal so cold weather has never been a problem.) The Ring 2 seems unable to utilize the more-than-adequate available light so it uses infrared resulting in blurry black and white video. The original Ring worked well in the same light. Is this to encourage the purchase of a new Ring Spotlight? Gross.

I also have this problem. New DB2, hardwired with the perfect current. It is not charging and Ring Support just told me I was using it too much and the hardwire will not charge the device. I know other DB2 users who have never had to charge their hard-wired devices. What has changed . I think I will return my doorbell and buy a Nest if this is not sorted in the next day or so.

Update from me. My Ring Doorbell 2 has now started charging. It went from about 90% to 100% overnight following a few calls with Ring Support. I'm not sure if they did anything or if it fixed itself. I was on the verge of returning it and I made that very clear to them. It did freeze after my first call with them and I had to do a hard reset when I got home in the evening, so hard to tell what made it work.

@Eddys Can you find out if they updated your firmware?

My Ring video doorbell 2 was doing the same thing. Tech support said it was because I didn't have a resistor in the line and no chime unit. They said it must of "burned" out the unit. They sent me a resistor and a new unit because it was under warranty. If you don't have a chime make sure you out a resistor in the line ![resistor.jpg|719x541](upload://6sKSHRgqwhmPM8S2Sor41E8FM8k.jpeg)

So Ring Support’s solution is “SoCal” is too cold, and/or buy more hardware not included with the original product because if you don’t it’ll “burn out the product”...2 years after installation (I purchased mine May 2018)? Lol “Support” is a absolute joke. They don’t have a clue and are just script readers.

I have had everything since day one! Including 2 chines, the pro and non pro. My WiFi is -43 can’t get better ! Hard wired since day one, still loses charge. Bunch of script readers and clowns.

My ring doorbell has stopped working, works for a bit and then nothing. Blue circle light flashes, cannot find out what this means. Any suggestions? My doorbell 2 just recently magically started charging as of a few days ago. Does anyone know if they updated the firmware? Is anyone else experiencing the same thing where their doorbell is charging properly again? Mine is currently at 100%. Also note my temps are in the teens so the temperature blame was a playbook response. Very disconcerting they would treat customers this way instead of being transparent. Another note I have a second wireless camera that was charging just fine in cold temperatures while the doorbell was not. That leads me to this question. How do you tell when the firmware was updated or see release notes for the firmware your running?

@DawtCom Hey there’s no way to see the firmware without contacting support. Tier 1 Support (I just go Chat) can at minimum tell you your current firmware version (after telling you it’s “up to date” lol just insist on the version number). I’m still waiting for release notes though I requested them last week and nothing yet (24-48h my ). They also \*might\* be able to tell you what day it was updated but don’t hold your breath. Can you \*please\* contact chat support and find out what firmware version you have? Most people in here aren’t finding out this info but the more we know the closer we can hopefully find a pattern (because tech support is useless). I have 1.26.16 and I’m now charging but @wpgcan is 1.22.27 and not charging (and wpgcan and I are in the same city so weather isn’t a factor)

I will try to reach out to \*support\*. Currently my ring doorbell is maintaining 100% which is drastically different than what its been since December.

        Same. Guess the "weather" improved.

Since my last post, my Ring started charging and it's at 100%. The battery has been ranging from 98% to 100% . It also has been around 10 degrees F here, which is considerbly colder than the 50 degree F weather when it was draining. Not sure what changed, but its certainly not the weather affecting the battery being charged.

Just had a ring hardwired a week or so ago and battery is down to almost 90%. I would say I had 15-20 motion events over the course of that span. Seems like excessive charge lost considering its hardwired and the device is brand new...

Ring doorbell been running on transformer for about 4 months with device charging and internal bell ringing. Now the RING doorbell is not charging but the internal transformer powered bell is still working so this shows me that the cable back to the transformer is intact hence the bell is working but is the fact the device is not charging a RING issue?

Hi @iankearns! Great work testing the power supply and the chime kit in configuration. You are correct in stating, if your chime kit works then power must be reaching your Ring device. Please ensure the wiring used is not too thin, spliced, frayed, corroded or old, as this can cause resistance in power. It's worth also checking the length of run from power supply to door, as hundred of feet of wire might also present some resistance. As @observing shared, switching which terminal each wire connects to on the back of your Video Doorbell might also be a step worth trying. Feel free to let us know how this goes! :)

So I am still having issues with my Ring Video Doorbell 1st gen not charging. As I stated in my prvious post I have attempted to charg my doorbell via the USB port on the back of the unit. When I initially plug it it the blue light will blink on and off fro a couple of minutes and then the blue light goes off and apparently stops charging. if I un plug the USB cable and plugg it in again it will start flashing again charge a little and then stop. I have to keep doing this for it to charge. I leave it overnight and it again appears to stop charging once the blue light stops flashing. After doing this many times it eventual got to 23%. I then re-connected it to the mounting plate with a hard wired connection (which I have been using for the last 4 years) the doorbell had a white light glowing around the button which to me tells me its getting power. I checked the doorbell a couple of hrs later asaw that the battery level had dropped and by the next day the battery on the unit was critically low, down to 2%. Why all of a sudden is this happening???? is my battery bad in the doorbell? Anyone from Ring Listening???

What a typically lame response on a problem that is quite obviously something brought on by something Ring did - ... best route is to call support and go through that pain staking process of doing everything you have tried to do again and again and then maybe if lucky it works again and that crappy speaker they put in will crackle and whisper to all visitors. Put in washers....who's idea was that....good lord... Can Ring just fess up and admit they pushed stuff out and now people are having problems?? Nooo...can't admit fault.

This worked for me. I've been looking for this solution for four years. Power was good at transformer and it the doorbell. This solution needs to be posted on the Ring troubleshooting site as well.
