I had the exact same circumstance. Have to purchase your own ring camera OR wait until the device on your house has not been"online" or "used" for 30 consecutive days, in which case you can call customer service and claim it as your own device.

Hi there, @Madg17! When receiving or trying to setup a Ring device that was previously owned by someone else, your initial setup attempt should send a request to release ownership. Please wait a few days for previous owners to remove the device from their account. If you are in contact with the previous owner, this can always speed things along.
