Maximize motion detection range

I just installed my Ring Spotlight Cam Battery (with Solar Panel). It works great, and it a nice compliment to my Ring Doorbell. The main reason I installed the camera is to catch motion in my backyard near the property line…about 70 feet away. I’ve put in two shrubs in the last two years and both times they’ve been destroyed. Could be deer…could be the neighbors kids…and I want to know.

Anyway, I want to maximize the distance the motion detection will work. Ring recommends installing the camera 9’ up to get a 30 ’ coverage. Is there anything I can do to improve that distance? Raise the camera? Point the camera more upwards? Both?

Hey @Rugby52. The Spotlight Cam Battery uses a PIR motion detector to detect motion up to about 30 feet away when installed at that 9 feet high height. Since it’s heat detection with the PIR sensor, it will struggle to see the change of heat from further out. You can test if it can detect motion further out by installing it higher up to see further out, but it most likely will not be ideal. Feel free to let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the feedback. I put the camera up about 10.5 or 11 feet. It still seems like it’s only capturing motion from about 30’ out. Whatever (or whoever) is coming through my yard will most likely have to come through an area where they trip the sensor so I hope it works. It would be nice to get more than a 30 second recording though so I can be sure to capture the activity. Thanks for the help.
