Car Cam Exterior Notifications Not Working

I installed my Car Cam and exterior notifications are not working. I am receiving notifications for the interior only. My motion sensitivity is set to maximum and interior motion verification is turned off so I should be receiving alerts for outside of my vehicle. Motion frequency is set to frequently. Can someone at Ring assist? I’m assuming this is a software issue that will hopefully be fixed ASAP.

I’m having the same problem with mine.

Same here on phone over hour no outside motion. Does your OBD-II port blinks and front facing camera blue dot seems to be always on is that normal? Very disappointing customer support didn’t even have a clue.

UPDATE:
So I did some further testing today. Cars or people moving by the front of the car didn’t trigger any outside motion alerts. What did however trigger alerts for me today were: heavy rainfall, pushing on the car so it rocked, knocking my fist on the car and starting the vehicle remotely. So it seems that most of the outside motion alerts were triggered more by some sort of vibrations than visible motion.

Is anyone having an issue with getting it to record the outside of your vehicle while driving? Mine is constant recording me inside. Can’t find anything to change default camera facing. The only way for me to get it to record the exterior is to open app and flip camera on the live view

Interior and exterior are recorded simultaneously.

In the app, while playing back a recording; select the flip camera button on top right hand corner. It will display the exterior recording.

Outside motion detection does not work at all. Guess this camera will be returned.

What I’ve been told by Ring support is that it does not detect visual camera motion. Instead it detects motion event to the vehicle itself like bumps or crashes. So far for me the only things that have triggered it was heavy rainfall, me banging on the door or hood with my hand and bouncing the car by pushing on the bumper. Waving my hand or an open umbrella or a car driving right by the front of the car didn’t trigger anything apparently because it didn’t "disturb’ my car in anyway. Considering the fact the camera won’t stay on longer than half a day, having even more motion alerts would cause it to shut off much sooner. They would need to allow us to plug this into an external battery back if it was going to detect true motion alerts. I have a feeling my unit will be sent back in a couple weeks.

After more research on this. I found out the the only way to get the outside camera to detect motion is to put the privacy shield on the inside of the camera. It worked for me now.

What are you doing for it to detect motion I had to knock on front window to get it to detect

I had to change the motion settings to Frequently to get it to record as I drive. I only did a short test around my driveway however.

Thank you for response I just set up I have it set to frequently but all I’m trying to do is walk in front of my car while it is parked in the garage not turned on. camera is active but it’s not detecting my motion outside of car.

Good luck. Unless you actually “hit” the car I don’t think it will record anything unless the car is started. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of these things returned, including mine.

Hi mark,

You seem to have the most experience with this. Any solutions other than what’s on here. It’s crazy that it won’t detect normal outside motion like someone walking close to it with the car off. Hopefully ring is watching the thread and maybe there will be an update.

The only “motion” it detects on the outside is disturbances to the vehicle. They told me on two occasions now that it does NOT detect motion with the camera itself like their other cams. Their marketing is very deceiving about this point.

Same here. If the new Ring Car Cam does not detect motion while parked, mine will be going back for sure. What’s the point of having one?

Thank you most likely returning. I can kinda deal with it just so I can turn on camera when I want but now I’m dealing with the camera turning off to save car battery even when setting is right. Have to restart car. Too bad you can’t just turn on and off camera from app. So you can check in on car when you want.

Same here! Finally got some outside motion detection! Now I dont get any vehicle location updates!

I agree. It is very strange that the device is using so much car battery that it turns off in such a short amount of time. That’s why I asked them why we can’t at least connect it to an external battery for long periods of time, like if the car is parked at an airport for a vacation week.

Exterior notifications are off by default. Try opening the ring app and clicking on your car cam. Next, under Motion Settings, click Advanced. Then, disable Interior Motion Verification. When this is enabled, all motion outside is ignored. Let me know if this works for you all.
