Why do I need a "forced subscription" for cameras

The RING alarm system is basically good and easy to use. But why is there practically a compulsory subscription for the cameras? Anyone who wants to have recordings on the Internet can certainly complete it. But the base station also has a USB port. Why can't Ring save locally like other providers? For remote surveillance, the cameras are worthless, at least for nighttime access.
