Time between motion sweeps missed important event

Anyone else have issues with motion detection even in people only mode picking up cats or dogs but not people in the motion zone? My wife was attacked by a neighbor on Saturday and thankfully my neighbors nest cams caught most of it but even though there is a still picture  that the floodlight cam caught it did not record any video of the incident. The motion was on the far side of my car from the camera and in view of both my ring doorbell and outside camera. I can't seem to find a balance between the ring alerting every time a car comes by and completely missing events, even with custom motion detection zones.
