There is no ownership prompt

I purchased a home from an elderly couple with a Ring doorbell installed. They don't know how to remove their Ring devices from their account and it's not very practical for me to drive to their new address in a different state to walk them through it. When I try to register the doorbell or Chime, the app says the device is registered to someone else and links to a help page. The help page says to "follow the prompts" in the app to request ownership of the device. **There are no prompts in the app.** The documentation is wrong.

Hi there, @Kevin11! When changing the ownership of a Ring device, the first step is to request this from the prior owner. Attempting a setup of the device in the Ring app will prompt the previous owners of this request. If you have a way to contact the registered owner you can send them a link to this [help center article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/4403292609044-Device-still-registered-to-its-owner-error-during-setup), which contains step-by-step instructions on removing the device from their account. If the above does not help you obtain ownership of the Ring device, please give our support team a call at one of the numbers available [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/213608406). We’re taking additional steps to protect our team and help reduce the spread of COVID-19, so this has resulted in longer than normal wait times. If you are outside of the US, please read our response to COVID-19 [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360041597471) to see how to contact support.

I'm in a similar situation with a Ring Alarm system. Recently bought a house, we moved in, the previous owner left the Alarm system for us, but I can't do anything with it because It's still showing the device as registered to the previous owner. I have no way of getting a hold of this person, and the real estate agents have been trying as well for the past month and still nothing. I called your support as directed above, and they're absolutely worthless; say they can't do anything! So what do you do, through the damn thing away to the garbage?? So frustrating! THERE IS GOT TO BE A ANOTHER WAY!!!

Hi @Rez. Since the Ring Alarm is a sensitive security device, the protocols in place can be pretty stringent. However, there are procedures that will allow you to take ownership of the Ring Alarm. When you call our support team, be sure that you are speaking to a trained Ring Alarm agent and they will be able to transfer ownership of the Ring Alarm to you after some documents have been verified. Please give our support team a call at one of the numbers available [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/213608406).
