So I enabled 2 factor authentication - now my question is the following. We have multiple family members with the app but the 2 factor authentication only goes to one number.

I too would like to know this. 2 factor is being pushed pretty hard for good reason but it’s useless for people where multiple persons need access- which is most people.

Hey there neighbors! The Two-factor Authentication is an important feature to use on your personal account to ensure for maximized security. If you need to grant device access to multiple people (family, friends, etc), it may be a better idea to add them as a shared user. This will prevent the need for getting multiple text message codes when attempting to log into the account from other devices. Also, if the device stays logged in, you will not need to worry about getting a code so often, as you only need it when logging in. Learn more about shared users [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/211018223-Controlling-Ring-Devices-through-Multiple-Devices-or-Sharing-Control-with-Other-Users).

Hi. I appreciate your taking the time to write, Chelsea. But I think we all are still confused about how two factor authorization and shared users intersect, and when. If the primary user is NOT logged into Ring (either via phone or PC) can a shared user access either/both the live views and talk with someone? At what point would the shared user need the account logged in with two-factor authorization to do something? Maybe a better way to ask is: 1) what can be done without logging in? 2) What can only be done after logging in with 2-factor? And by whom: shared user vs. owner. Does this help break down the question? Thank you.

Hi @kathym, there is no functionality in the Ring app if you are not logged into an account. Each Ring account has its own two-factor enable/disable setting. Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security that a single authentication system such as a password alone cannot provide. The features that a shared user can access do not change with Two-Factor Authentication disabled/enabled, they still match the ones listed in [the article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/211018223-Controlling-Ring-Devices-through-Multiple-Devices-or-Sharing-Control-with-Other-Users) I included above about shared users. Two-factor authorization is simply a security measure. It will not affect any other settings on your Ring app. Please let me know if that is helpful and answers all your questions.

Hi, Agree with above posters. The way you have it set up is useless for more than 1 person on the account. Making it even more useless for me is I have 2 Ring accounts (hubby and I each a shared user on the other) because you will not allow more than one location per account. One is for a vacation rental. If I am the only one who gets the 2 factor text, my husband is locked out if something needs to be addressed. Not everyone can respond immediately to a text to verify the account. Ring needs to allow more numbers on the two factor authentication.

What if the (only) phone number for 2FA is lost or stolen and you need to log into Ring on a different phone? You need to be able to enable 2FA from more than one device (just as Apple allows on 2FA on an Apple ID) - to get in and remove the lost or stolen phone number.
