trouble remounting the battery doorbell

Everytime we try to reattach the battery doorbell, we have trouble getting the bottom to click. By the time we get it attached, I have to start over on connecting, and its has lost the system. I have to remove again, push the button, reattach (again trying for several minutes) and lose it again. Not sure if that is a good explanation, but the design is not user friendly.
