Stick Up Cam Battery not detecting motion through windows. Regular Indoor cam is fine. Any ideas?

So I just set up a new Stick Up Battery cam I bought over the holidays. I set it up pointing through a window. However, it does not detect any motion at all. Live feed works fine, when I turn it around and face it inside it works, but absolutely nothing through the window. As part of my troubleshooting I moved it to another location and placed it inside another window literally right next to a regular plugged in Ring Indoor Cam. Still nothing. I can walk outside and stand 2 feet from the camera and it does not detect anything through the window. Meanwhile, the regular plug in cam can reliably detect motion and identify people 40+ feet away through the exact same window. I also have a bunch of $15 cams from Wyze that face through the same windows and they all also detect motion 40+ feet out. But the much more expensive Ring Stick Up, nothing. I see a couple of threads from 2020 and 2021 mentioning the same thing but none of them mentions a solution. If my Stick Up Battery Cam broken or are these just garbage and use a different type of motion detection than the other Ring cams and simply can’t detect anything through a window?

Hi @GuitarMan. We do not recommend facing any Ring Security cameras directly at a window. The glass is highly likely to have a negative impact on the motion detection, as you’re seeing with your Stick Up Cam. You mention the Indoor Cam is detecting motion without issue in spite of the glass, but this is not likely to be the case for most Ring Cameras, since they are not intended to be faced directly at a window. We have some information on how motion detection works here. The Stick Up Cam can be installed indoors or outdoors, so I’d suggest looking into placing it outside if you’re wanting to monitor an area outside the home.

Thanks. I have found the problem. The window is not the problem. It seems that when the Stick Up cam is first configured you have a choice to set it up as either Plugged In or Battery. If you configure it as Battery it automatically forces it to run in a low power mode that causes motion detection to not work through a window. I tried reconfiguring it to Plugged In and this resolved the motion detection issue. It was able to detect motion through the window without a problem. However, as I expected, it also drained the battery from full to 20% in less than 18 hours. I bought a power cord to run it plugged in. I know Ring likes to tell people that motion detection doesn’t work through windows but in reality it does, in most cases just fine. As is the case with several other cameras I have from other companies. The biggest problem is the cameras picking up reflections from any lights inside but when it’s brighter outside than it is inside, it works perfectly. My Ring Indoor camera picks up motion well beyond 40 feet through a window. And of course, the fact that the Stick Up Cam doesn’t work through windows when it’s running in Low Power mode because during setup it was configured to run on battery.
