Ring Home Plan
Paid Plan Subscriber, Newly Added Devices Triggering Redundant Trial and Purchase Nag Screens
I've been a paid subscriber for years, currently with an active Ring Home Standard Plan and a multitude of doorbells, cameras, and other devices attached to my account. I recently added a few more cameras, and Ring apparently decided that in addition to attaching those to my existing already paid plan as expected, it would create an identical, entirely redundant Trial Home Standard plan for them. Note that this wasn't extending my current plan, just creating an identical parallel trial version of the same plan I'm already paying for annually. According to a Ring support chat agent, the policy is that every new Ring device added to an account is now forced into generating a new trial plan regardless of whether it's being added to a concurrent existing paid plan or not. As a result, the app is now overlaying a large orange nag pop-up on top of the camera preview screen, instructing me to "Learn how to keep premium features" before the nonsense duplicate trial plan ends. I was informed there is no way to disable these erroneous messages or remove/deactivate the duplicate trial plan from my account, so now I'm forced to deal with an irrelevant ad for the next 3 weeks until the trial that should never have existed finally times out. It's mind boggling that no one within any of Ring's management, user experience, accounts, or engineering teams could possibly anticipate how broken and problematic this approach is. Surely there is a way to opt out devices from triggering trial creation when they're added to an existing paid plan during setup, yes? Or maybe we could simply detect when a device is attached to a paid plan and therefore disable illogical purchase reminder triggers for it? This situation feels so sloppy and careless, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in investing further in the platform as a consumer.
