Wired Doorbell Pro Keeps Frying Transformer
Hello, I've had a Wired Doorbell Pro (Video Pro 2) installed for about 18 months. Before that there was a 1st generation ring installed. When I first installed the Pro, the indoor chime buzzed very faintly. After a bit of research, I added a resistor on the chime, which stopped the buzzing. I had the chime set to mechanical, but had unchecked the ring in-home chime as I did not want to use it. Fast forward to last week, there was a random single loud sound from the chime and smoke coming from it. The resistor had burned up. Any replacements also burned up. Without the resistor the buzzing was back and shortly after the V3 Power Kit started burning up. I called support about bypassing the chime and was told to buy the V2 Power Kit to allow bypassing the chime. That worked for a few hours, but the V2 kit started burning. I tied off the wires in the chime, essentially wiring direct to the transformer. That seemed to work fine, but when the doorbell button was pressed, the doorbell died. I determined the transformer was dead and bought a replacement Ring transformer for the Wired Doorbell Pro. Testing this transformer (and the ones that followed) I got 17 volts. This had the same result, once the doorbell was pressed the transformer died. I remembered the app setting and set the chime type to "none" and replaced the transformer again. Same result. Wiring through the chime again works for a few hours, with no buzzing and a working doorbell. However, eventually the power kit will start to smell and the chime will start clicking and buzzing. I currently have the doorbell disconnected. There is definitely a different power behavior at the chime than the previous 18 months, simply demonstrated by the burning resistors and Power Kits. The transformers frying seems to indicate it is coming from the doorbell. Has anyone seen behavior like this? Before I expand redoing/replacing beyond the transformer I'd like a good idea of what caused this after all this time.
