Ring Video Doorbell
White noise when in night vision mode
Hi everyone, I've noticed in my brand new Doorbell 2 that whenever image switches to night vision (on Live View or recorded videos) there is a change in audio quality in they way that you can hear some white noise sound (hum)? When image is back to color mode noise I gone. I haven't noticed something similar for Doorbell 1. I've already tried hard resetting the device and was testing it on charged battery. Is it normal behavior for Doorbell 2? If not, could this be hardware issue? I can upload audio file from recording. Thanks Michal

Hello @N0RM, sorry to hear this is occurring with your Video Doorbell 2 as well. Would you happen to have a video example you might be comfortable sharing on here so we can understand the noise you are hearing better?

NHello @Riley\_Ring, have you seen the videos in my links regarding the strange sounds that start when night vision is switched on?

RHi @N0RM, thank you for sharing these examples. After viewing them both I believe the best option would be for your to reach out to our support team so that they can take a deeper look into this for you, as I do not immediately see what could be causing this. I appreciate you sharing these on the Community and know our support team will be happy to help!

Same here, same exact problem with my new Doorbell 2. Ring should take responsibility for this. Poor product = loss of customers.

KI Agree. It is some kind of feedback when the IR LED come on. It is a electronic humm kind of similar to picking up an electrical line humm through a speaker. They could put a electronic filter in the circuit somewhere to block this frequency from feeding back through the microphone. It is even possible that this may be the transformer from the doorbell that it is picking up. Although why it only sounds when the camera switches over to night mode is a little puzzling. It may be the night mode hardware/circuit that is releasing the feedback from the transformers. I do not know, but way to many people have this same issue for it not to be a hardware problem. They obviously will not acknowledge this because they would have to replace a bunch of hardware to those customers affected by the defective devices. It seems like they want to make the customer jump through hoops and then return the item to replace it. The replacement does not fix the problem because the same defect is in the replacements.

MI have same problem with my Ring doorbell 2. Mine was replaced by Support and of course the issue is still present. Question is if this is a software or hardware problem? Ring Doorbell 2 has been on the market for quite some time already - and this issue seems to be relatively new. So I'm wondering if this could be due to some bad hardware part that is being used in recent production line? Admitting this by Ring would cause them to loose a lot of money as they would need to fix production line and replace bad items for free. For now it's best to avoid Doorbell 2. Perhaps Door View Cam doesn't have this problem.

I just purchased the ring door bell 2. I've had it installed for a couple of days. During the night vision mode you can hear the noise/hum. I also noticed if you go listen to the ring door bell it makes a high pitch sound while in night vision mode. I hear hum/noise while using note 9, galaxy 10 plus, and echo 2nd gen. I also can hear it by physically putting my ear up to the ring door bell. Can others confirm they hear the same noise by putting your ear up to the doorbell?

MSorry to hear about these experiences, neighbors. As stated previously in this thread, including a video example will help determine potential causes. Audio feedback can often be related to network or wiring (if hardwired). These instances will also be shared with the appropriate teams. In the meantime, please try a power cycle by removing the Video Doorbell 2 battery and reinserting it after 10 seconds. Please let us know if this improves anything. Thank you!

JThe examples posted by other people are accurate for me as well of the noise in night vision mode, it is not a network issue or a wiring issue( tried 2 routers and with and without the hard wire for power. I have also tried as well as other people here, resetting the device, battery out and button and nothing changes it, every night it’s there. This seems to be the standard CS response with the problems

YI posted above about mine. I just bought my father in law a ring door bell 2. I went and installed his and his also hums/white noise. His is brand new and it only happens in night vision mode too. I think there is a issue with the ring door bells. You can also put your ear up to his and here the noise while night vision mode is on. I've done all the troubleshooting on mine and still didnt fix it. I tested it on a brand new ring doorbell and still get the same noise on 2 different networks/routers.

GHow many video examples do you need to see/hear Marley? Just getting some acknowledgement of what appears to be a widespread issue would go a long way towards keeping Ring customers....not sure if you are with Ring or if just a moderator, but it is abundantly obvious that we are dealing with a hardware and/or software issue. Ring wants us to jump through all these troubleshooting hoops (which we are doing) but there are no solutions forthcoming or any suggestion that Ring is working on a fix. So, expect some bad reviews and more returned devices.....When you have a product with known problems, it's always best to get out ahead of it.....Ring has done too little, too late for me.....

MI think it would be good idea to put some additional spotlight on this issue by pinging Ring over the Support chat and perhaps posting messages on official Facebook page with reference to this thread.

AI agree, I just got off the phone with support. The person I talked to was nice but i had to go through all the basic trouble trouble shooting tests that I already I did before I even called in. When she kept putting me on hold to talk back and forth with the support specialists, I asked her to provide them with this thread. I told her that it would be the easiest way for them to see what this problem is and how it is becoming an issue with many units. Either they already know and not saying anything or they are lumping this specific issue in with basic noise issues. After some time on the phone, they are sending a replacement unit. Hopefully this one will work. I have read that others did the same thing but they had the same results with the replacement. I have some hope because I know atleast two other people who bought doorbell 2 around the same time and they don't have the issue. I do have to agree with others who suggested this is a hardware issue. After taking the unit down to test it inside and putting it to my ear, I was able to hear the noise directly from the unit like someone else had already posted. I will update when replacement unit comes in.

JFingers crossed for you but I’m on my third Ring 2 after replacements from both Amazon and Ring and still the same issue despite trying all the suggested troubleshooting ideas.

I agree but would also suggest also posting low-starred reviews on Amazon (if that is where it was purchased) to 1) give fair warning to potential buyers of this apparently common problem and 2) perhaps finally get the attention of Ring and its parent company, Amazon. Since even replacement units still have the issue, it seems they have yet to fix their harware design/manufacturing flaw (I also own a Ring Doorbell (v1) and have never had this issue with it. It is seems to be only an issue with the Ring Doorbell 2.)

Hi Michal! It would be super helpful, if you can comment here with a Ring video share link of what is occurring. This will help everyone better understand the situation.
