Hi_Im_Kat
Ring doesn’t pick up walk ups
I’ve had my Doorbell 3 for two years with no issues until seversl months ago. It stopped picking up people who walk up and only occasionally pick up people who are at the doorstep. It often picks up people who walk out of the door, but that has decreased in the last month. I hadn’t changed any settings but have tried messing around with settings. One setting change was particularly interesting to me. I increased sensitivity and it would pickup people waking by along with cars driving by despite it not being in a designated zone, yet still wasn’t capturing walk up’s or people at our doorstep.

I’ve had a Ring 2 wired for about 4 months. Today a person walked up to the front door and there was no detection / notification. The network was as strong as usual (RSSI 60, green). There are snapshots at 3 minute intervals between notifications, and I can see the person in one of these. Motion detection is set On. It turned out to be my wife, and I was home at the time she came from the street and walked through the door without being detected. When she walked back out through the door she was detected and reported. This is the first time I’ve noticed this, but how would I know if it was the only time it’s happened - it’s a bit disappointing! What good is a security camera if it doesn’t always detect people walking from the street up to the front door?? What can be done to correct this? Thanks.

THi @user75563. Theres a number of things to consider when motion is missed. Was there recently a motion event before the missed motion? If so, you may need to adjust your Motion Frequency. You can learn about this here. Did you have Modes enabled at the time? This can also affect when your doorbell records.

Thanks for your thoughts - in answer there were no other motions or approaches to the door for at least 30 minutes before the missed approach. And we have often had multiple approaches within 2 - 5 minutes notified and recorded properly in the past. Modes were enabled, and as noted, I’m not aware of any previous approaches not being notified and recorded. How can I regain confidence that my Ring will Always notify and record approaches from the street? Thanks.

Hi @user7556. Thank you for this follow up information. I’m going to suggest taking a look at this post here, when you can refine your settings. Also, try connecting to a WiFi and see if improving your RSSI will also improve your motion detection. If you’ve tried this to no avail, I would suggest reaching out to our support team so they can deep dive into this concern. Please send us a private message on Facebook @Ring or give our support team a call at one of the numbers available here. If you are outside of the US, please visit here to see how to contact support.

UIm having the EXACT issue. All was fine, now im not receiving PERSON AT DOOR anymore, I’ve changed nothing. It appears it’s not just me. And yes, I have frequency set up correctly along with notifications and mode zones. In addition, my wifi has excellent connection. I’m ruling out that this is a user issue and more so a RING end issue. Please advise of the correction! Thanks

CHi @user77335. Person alerts are specific to the Smart Alerts settings, so I’d recommend verifying that this is still set to your preference. Then test out the motion detection by walking in front of your Doorbell to see if you receive the correct alert.

When adding this reply I see a sidebar message that “this topic has been solved”. I disagree, the ‘solution’ doesn’t work for me. Nothing about my settings changed, the network is strong, and I think 99% of walk-ups are properly reported (both before and since the reported problem). I am uncomfortable that a security camera does not pick up XXXX% of walk-ups. The troublesome part of this is that I don’t know how often it happens that walk-ups are not reported, because… they are not reported. I happened to be present when the reported case happened, but with 3 - 10 second gaps in the video and the time required to review past video, it’s difficult to verify the reported problem was a single glitch in the universe, or to know if it’s actually happening more often. What can be done to further diagnose and resolve this condition? I want to get back my original confidence in the Ring doorbell security. Lacking that, why would I buy more Ring devices?? Is missing ‘just a few’ walk-ups really considered adequate quality for a doorbell security system?? I hope not. Thanks!

Hi @Hi_Im_Kat. Various different factors can impact your Doorbell’s ability to detect motion, including the settings, wifi connection, as well as the placement and angle of your Doorbell. I’d recommend checking the RSSI on the Device Health screen to ensure your Doorbell is receiving a strong and stable connection first. After checking that, you can find some motion detection optimization tips in our guide here, which covers some of the settings as well as the importance of the mounting height and angle of your Doorbell. For further assistance, please give our support team a call at one of the numbers available here. You can also get in touch with our support team on Facebook @Ring.
