I received a Ring Doorbell about a year ago and just tried setting it up today. It also registered as having a different owner. It was purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond as a new device in factory sealed packaging. I called support and found out it was a refurbished device, obviously returned from another owner who had set it up. I was astounded that Ring refurbishes devices and then doesn't mark them as such. There was no way to know that it was a refurbished device, and more amazing is that in the refurbish process, they didn't remove the previous owner! The support rep told me the only way to tell is if you purchase it for a reduced price from a 3rd party, but it wasn't a reduced price. So I'm wondering if Bed Bath and Beyond, and Target and Best Buy, etc. know that they might be selling refurbished devices. I'm also amazed that Ring is sending out security devices that someone else already has access to. That doesn't seem very secure! The best part was that when I expressed that I thought this was not acceptable for a security company the rep told me that I should take it up with the 3rd party seller, because Ring is not responsible for it. I found that most amazing of all. If I had it to do over, I'd take down all my Ring devices and go to a competitor that takes security and responsibility to customers more seriously.

Hi there, @concerned! If you purchased this as a new Ring device, this should not happen. To obtain ownership of the Ring device and complete a setup, follow our [Change of Ownership process](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025997592-Ownership-of-a-Ring-Device). As you mentioned purchasing this at a 3rd party retailer, a concern about it's shelf status or packaging is best handled with them. If the Change of Ownership process is not successful or you are needing further assistance gaining ownership, please give our support team a call at one of the numbers available [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/213608406). We’re taking additional steps to protect our team and help reduce the spread of COVID-19, so this has resulted in longer than normal wait times. If you are outside of the US, please read our response to COVID-19 [here](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360041597471) to see how to contact support.

I hope, deeply, that you have not received a refurbished/recalled device, sold as new. On the back of my doorbell is a sticker/barcode with a 5 digit serial number. Goto ring.com. Click on the contact us link. Call the number for your country. Give them your serial number. Let us know how you make out.
