Contradictory Installation Instructions?

I recently tried to install my Ring Doorbell Wired without a pre-existing chime by connecting the doorbell wires directly to a transformer (as illustrated here: https://ring.com/support/articles/i76ke/Wiring-Diagrams-for-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Wired). It seems as though this fried my brand-new transformer. Looking further, another page on Ring's website states I need a resistor in order to wire this way (https://ring.com/support/articles/3gdo4/How-to-Connect-Your-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Directly-to-a-Low-Voltage-Transformer-Without-a-Pre-existing-Doorbell). I've ordered a new transformer and the required resistor, but just looking for some input on whether I should expect this method to work or if I should ditch it and try something else.
