Product question - external camera / light (replacing existing stand-alone light)
We are looking to replace our existing backyard light, with a camera and light. But there is something I am not understanding and need to clarify, before I go out and buy it. Right now, the light turns on and off, via a switch we have inside. If I do a straight replacement, if we turn off the switch to turn off the light, then camera won't have power. If we leave the switch on, then the lights are on all the time as well, which is both wasteful, and could be bothersome to neighboors. I only have 1 circuit/connection, between the switch and the current outside light. These are my questions: 1 - how exactly do we do it, that the camera always has power, but that we be able to turn the lights on and off (like if we are cooking or something)? 1B - Are the camera and lights powered independantly (as in same or separate wires). If separate, wires then I can get an electrician to run separate power just for the camera 2 - Do the lights (also) turn on automatically by motion? 3 - If the wired camera has night vision, does it automatically turn on the lights to film? I have two Ring Floodlight Cams installed in two separate light junction boxes, which are controlled by the same light switches. The Floodlight Cam is one device that houses both the security camera and floodlights. There are separate motion sensors for the camera and for the lights. The light switch must be left on for to power the device (both camera and lights). If you need to power cycle or reset the Floodlight cams, then turn the light switch on and off. To answer your quesions: 1) Leave the light switch on at all times. There is a separate toggle in the app to turn the lights on and off manually. I will caveat that with there was an issue a while back with the lights staying on--not sure if that has been fixed. The app also allows you to set up a light schedule, so that may be a workaround if it's not fixed. 1B) It's all one device, so no need for separate wires for camera and lights. I have generation 1 Floodlight Cams, so three wires for the entire device. I think the generation 2 Floodlight Cams are all plastic, so they might not have a ground. Watch the install video. It's actually pretty easy to install, except for the getting on a ladder part. 2) Camera and lights have separate motion detection, which use different technology. So, yes the lights will turn on automaticaly when it detects motion. 3) You can turn of the motion-activated lights.
