The tampered icon disappears when the sensor in question goes back to a normal state. There is a tiny switch inside the sensor which gets triggered when the sensor is opened to replace the batteries. When you close it back up "properly" it goes back to normal operation and the icon goes away. The reason I say "properly" is because on mine, I had used a pair of screws to secure it, and those screws were a bit too big, which caused the sensor to stay in tampered mode since the plastic enclosure did not fit exactly right. Once I replaced the screws with low profile ones, the issue went away.
