FE599 Intermittent Communication

I have a Schlage FE599 Z-wave lock (on Ring’s certified list). Paired with the Ring alarm system with no issues. However, locking and unlicking from the Ring app is intermittent. The lock is about 12’ from the base station, but in-line with the wall. That means to me that the Z-wave signal has to penetrate several wall studs and that may be weakening the signal. Based on that theory, I placed a range extender in a location that gives it line-of-sight communication to both the base station and the lock. Still intermittent. This is the second Schlage FE599 I tried. The first had the same issue. Any ideas?

Hi @user7032. Good call on using a Range Extender to try and help strengthen the connection to your Schlage lock. Typically we recommend the Range Extender to be at about a halfway point between the Base Station and the device with a weaker connection, which in this case is your Schlage lock. What types of building materials are near the lock and the Base Station? Different materials can cause interference to the Z-Wave frequency, with some affecting it more strongly than others.

I have similar issues. Exact same lock. Pairs fine, but every time I try to lock/unlock from the ring app, it fails 2 or 3 times. It eventually goes through if you try 4 or 5 times. However, if manually locking or unlocking the lock, the state change happens immediately in the ring app. Initially when I had this issue, I removed it from ring, and paired it with a third party zwave+ usb stick, and home automation hub. The lock worked flawlessly. Troubleshooting with a range extender and even moving the base station one foot away from the lock didn’t help with the issue.

Hi @BrandNewHistory. When trying to lock/unlock from the Ring app, are you connected to WiFi or cellular data? What type of phone are you using an what version of the Ring app is installed? I would also try rebooting the Base Station. This can be done in the Ring app under the Device Settings Menu > Advanced Options. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Tom. I've used the latest app version on both iOS and Android. WIFI, and Cellular. I've excluded and re-included the lock with the base station and power-cycled everything within the level 1 tier of troubleshooting. The issue is zwave related, the one way communication from the base station to the sleeping lock. I have experience with zwave outside of Ring, and the lock isn't receiving the signals the first or second time the commands are sent from the base station. I don't have access to the logs to see what's going on behind the scenes. The lock is awake when unlocked or locked using the physical buttons on the lock itself, and therefore sends the signal to tell the base station about the state change. I have used this exact lock with a third party zwave controller and home automation hub and it works flawlessly.
