Ring Car Cam Unsupported Vehicles

Hi folks, I was super excited to see the upcoming release of the car cam and all the features it provides. However, to my surprise, my 2014 Acura MDX is on the list of unsupported vehicles for some unknown reason (as are every year the SUV has been made). I have a regular ODB-2 port like almost every modern vehicle on the road, so what gives Ring?? I need to know why this camera is not supported in these Acuras please and if a slight modification needs to be made in order for this to work. What a deal breaker - I hope Ring engineers can resolve this for all us MDX owners!

Hi @DaveNC. Is your OBD-II port on the left or the right side of your steering wheel? For safety reasons, the Ring Car Cam should not be used in cars where the OBD-II port is on the right side of the steering wheel, as the installation could create an entanglement risk.

Yes, most of these cars have that port on the right (as do other vehicles that I have seen), a design decision I am sure from Acura. However, that would be up to me to secure that cabling at my own risk, just the same as it would be up to anyone installing this device anywhere else under the driver-side dash to secure theirs. Appreciate Ring looking out, but if that is the only factor, and not something technical - it would behoove Ring to just make that disclaimer and miss out on MDX customers.

Is the ONLY reason why ring cam wont work in a vehicle the location of the OBD2 port or is there ANYTHING else that would prevent operation of the cam? Ie.. OBD2 does not supply constant power for example?

Hi @Afijalko. There are various factors that could affect whether or not the Ring Car Cam is compatible with a particular vehicle. The list of incompatible vehicles on our Help Center will be updated as our team continues to test compatibility with different vehicles. Additionally, the Car Cam should not be used in cars that have the OBD-II port on the right side of the steering wheel as mentioned, given that the installation could create a risk while driving.

It sounds like Ring is trying to avoid liability for this car and several other models, but instead of offering a solution and/or disclaimer, chooses to prevent MDX owners from buying and using this product.

I don't think it's confined to just MDX or Acura. I think most Honda vehicles have the ODB-II port right of the steering column above the gas pedal.

I'm a little confused because I don't currently see MDX on their list of cars not supported.   https://ring.com/support/articles/fjyp4/Car-Cam:-Incompatible-Vehicles-and-Accessories Did something change?

Hi @user_f197d0. The list of vehicles and accessories that are incompatible with Ring Car Cam is subject to change at any time.
