Ring doorbell 2 update issue

I recently had to charge my ring doorbell2 battery (10th December) and when i plugged the battery back in and checked in on the app it said that the doorbell was going to do an update. Since then the doorbell has stopped working completely despite following all the technical advice about resetting it etc.Because the doorbell is 3 years old it is not covered by warranty so I was told ‘buy a new one’. My question is why has ring pushed out an update to my device to make it stop working?
