Metal piece doesn’t align with Peephole backing

Defect in peephole doorbell. There is a metal ring with a notch in it. This is in the piece that fits into the back of the door. The notch was installed to the side which means the strip I pulled out of the peephole has nowhere to go. I’ve tried to line up the notch with the white plastic piece but it won’t budge. Any thoughts?
