  Hey there, @Anon\_Y\_Mous! There is some great information in our Motion Detector [help center article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039498552-Ring-Alarm-Motion-Detector-Setup-and-Use) that you might find helpful. You'll notice it covers both Gen 1 and Gen 2 Motion Detectors, in which the only major difference between the two is physical dimensions and motion detection sensitivity. The 90 degree field of view is the same for both. We recommend a 7 1/2 foot mounting height for optimal sensitivity, however, each home is unique and can present numerous factors that can make detection distance vary. Feel free to also check out this [help center article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005178546-Getting-Started-Placing-Sensors-and-Motion-Detectors) which covers installation tips for optimal detection. The Motion Detector sensitivity can certainly be altered in the Ring app. I hope this helps! :)

  Thanks for the response. I want this specifically to protect a room with a large curtained window. The article says "do not point at curtains". Is the slight motion of curtains in the air currents of a ceiling fan or AC unit enough to set this off?? The other concern was whether the "beam" is more like a flat wave, or a scatter (like light from a light bulb)? If it's flat, or at least has a lower limit (like a cone might be), then I can tilt it up to "see" the windows - I really don't think anything is going to tunnel up through the middle of my living room floor!

  Thank you for the additional information. It's still not quite what I'm asking about, though. I know the motion detector senses changes in the environment. To do this, it must send out some sort of signal, then learn what the "normal" return signal looks like. Anything significantly different than normal triggers an alert. Think of light coming from a flashlight vs from a table lamp. The flashlight is generally a directional cone, with a beam angle and limits at the edges where the light intensity drops off. The table lamp simply tries to fill the area with light in all directions. I'm assuming the motion detector is most similar to a flashlight -- yes?? If so, are the specs for the angles of the projection cone available??
