First Alert Smoke/CO gen 2 won't connect

troubleshooting

I get to the stage that says First Alert Smoke Alarm. Slide open the tray, insert the batteries and push in the tray. After doing that, it beeps, but nothing happens in the app. I've spent the last two hours reading and trying various reset remedies. This is to replace a defective unit, so now I've had 4 units, and 2 seem defective/won't pair.

Hi @AaronCHS. There is a technique that might allow you to add this Smoke Alarm to your Ring Base Station. First, you'll want to bring the Smoke Alarm close to the Base Station and remove the batteries from the device. Next, open the Ring app and follow these steps. * Select the Base Station * Select the Device Settings tile * Select Advanced Options * Select Z-Wave * Select Remove Z-Wave Device * Select Remove * When you notice it says "Listening for a device...", preform the steps to add the device "hold the test button, insert batteries and slide in tray). You should see it say "Device successfully removed" if done correctly. Now, start the process to add the device again. This should allow you to add the Smoke Alarm. Let me know if this helps!

YES, this helped me! I suspected I wasn't getting it the smoke alarm fully removed after the first failed add attempt, which was causing my subsequent tries to ADD the smoke alarm to basically freeze at the Insert batteries..... screen, and never go to "preparing to add" or "Adding device" screens. At first I didn't notice you were saying "Select Base Station", after I noticed that it worked well for me. Thanks! Jay DeArmond P.S. Sorry I didn't see the Solution checkbox anywhere. I am new to this.

Had to do this a few times because it kept coming up as an error but 3rd time was a charm and this method works. I was able to then connect the device easily.

I realize this is an older post, but these steps helped me perfectly! I have a new First Alert Gen 2 Fire / CO detector (Gen 2) that is Z Wave compatible with Ring. The device failed to complete setup my first attempt. I removed the device from my Ring app on Android, and followed the First Alert instructions on how to 'reset' the device and Z Wave. I tried at least 10 times with no success. Every time I would try and re-setup the device in the Ring app, the Ring app would just be 'waiting' for the First Alert device to come online, but it never would, even if I opened the battery door, pressed the Test button and closed the battery door to 'wake up' the First alert device. I followed the steps listed above by Tom_Ring, and successfully removed the Z Wave device under Base Station Advanced Options in my Ring app, then ran setup again and the First Alert device was detected and setup perfectly. Thank you for solving my issue!

What if there is a Ring Retro Kit already installed and working? Will removing the First Alert device from the steps above take down that existing installation?

I'm in the same boat. I bought two of these. I was able to get one of my smoke alarms set up but the second one will not set up. I tried removing a Z wave device but it couldn't be located. Any other suggestions?

Hi @user_231389. Have you tried the troubleshooting suggestions mention in this thread and the accepted solution? Make sure the First Alert Smoke & CO Alarms are within range of the Base Station, otherwise they won't be able to connect. If none of these troubleshooting steps have worked, I'd recommend reaching out to our support team. You can get in touch at one of the numbers available here, or on Facebook @Ring via private message.

This helped me too, unlike the ring representative, who was clueless and wanted to reset the whole system.

Epic piece of $#!%. I too had to reset my base station and all of my z-wave stuff added fine except these. Because they do not have a hardware reset, only a software reset and appear to have an issue releasing bindings, they are a one-time add device. I spent time on the phone with First Alert today and they are aware of it and have zero plans to fix it. If this happens to you the only option is to replace them and First Alert will do it no hassle because they know they engineered it wrong.
