Ring app does not accurately reflect battery charge

I set up my new Stick Up Cam Solar several months ago (around end of May); it worked so well that I got a second one shortly thereafter. In the full Hawaiian summer sun, app initially showed batteries for both cams consistently charged at/near 100% every day. A couple of weeks ago, app started showing batteries slowly draining to where it has held steady at about 86% (1st cam) and 93% (2nd cam) for the past week – despite switching off “Record Motion” for up to a day at a time (both cams).

Fearing the worst, I just purchased a backup battery and ordered a Super Solar Panel through Amazon. Now, after seeing similar experiences described in various community posts, I’m thinking that the issue may not be with the hardware.

Ring app ver. 3.30.0; Android 10 on Galaxy S10.

Hi808, my new (3 week old) stickup cam and solar panel is doing the exact same thing (many others having the same experiences). I, too, am thinking it is not a hardware problem. Many were not experiencing this (charging) problem until after a firmware update a short time ago. I disable my motion notifications AND recording during the day and get minimal of both at night-time up to dawn (when it is again disarmed via schedule settings). This morning, battery charge was 92%. Have had intense Texas sun (90*) all day (panel aiming horizontal to the sky). With 8 hrs. of sunlight, one would think the battery would charge just a wee bit?? Nope. At 6pm, battery still reads… 92%. Again, no motion notifications or recordings.

This is a major fail by Ring that needs to be addressed. They have had plenty of feedback both from this Community forum as well as direct phone calls about it. Their software AND hardware engineers need to get together and address this problem ASAP! It’s a shame, too, because after setting up, optimumly positioning (very important, btw), and dialing in my settings…I’m rather liking my new Stickup cam. The image quality is quite nice.

My quandary right now is whether to send the solar panel back for a refund (Amazon purchase) or keep it thinking it MIGHT, to some extent, impede or slow the rate of battery discharge as opposed to using just the battery itself (although I haven’t tried that yet to compare). And I’m reluctant to believe the SUPER Panel would be any better. But I would certainly volunteer to have Ring send me a SUPER panel to test out and report back my findings. (But I won’t hold my breath)

Since day one I’ve had this issue. Battery charged over night and still stuck at 19%. Not even a month old.

Same issue. 2 fully charged batteries in a spot ought cam. Showing 15% and 8%. Even tried reconnecting cam to wifi. Android 10 on Galaxy s10. Ring app version 3.30.0

Hi neighbors! After charging your battery for several hours, it can sometime require a moment, or an event, for the battery to update in the app. If reconnecting or waiting has not resulted in a proper display of battery percentage, try removing and reinstalling the Ring app on your mobile device.

If you’ve charged your battery for several hours, using the micro usb as intended, and attempted the steps listed above, please send a screenshot example of the battery percentage and confirm the Ring app version and mobile device being used.

Hi I deleted and re downloaded the app, still no change in the old battery strength as per screen shots - very frustrating - version is 5.30.1

Aloha Tex78745 – appreciate your updates. WRT Super Solar Panel mentioned in your last post, here’s my experience from another thread: https://community.ring.com/t5/Security-Cams/Ring-Stick-Up-Cam-Battery-amp-Solar-Panel/td-p/56501/page/3

“My update: After replacing one of my two Standard Solar Panels with my new Super Solar Panel Friday morning (“stabilized” battery charge was at 86-87%), and after 5+ solid days of direct Hawaiian summer sun, app for this cam shows 86% battery charge this (Wednesday) afternoon. I have “Motion” turned off during the day. My other Stick Up Cam Solar, that I set up shortly after, continues to have a stabilized battery charge of 87-88% with its original Standard Solar Panel. There hasn’t been appreciable daily motion event changes since both cams consistently operated at/near 100% battery capacity; when I noticed app showing batteries for both cams slowly declining in capacity, I actually reduced the video recording times for both cams from 30 to 20 seconds. My Super Solar Panel change-out didn’t make any difference.”

Same here. Always 18% even after a full recharge. It only started after the last Ring app update. FYI using latest Android.

I have an iPhone 11 and changed the battery tonight, I was quite quick taking the old one out and putting the new one in. I had a steady blue light on the front of the device when the battery was changed and then checked the app a couple of hours later and it went to 100% maybe ring have fixed the bug as mine used to play up.

Battery security camera. I only had one battery in it and it was starting to lose power. I bought two new backup ring camera batteries and charged them to completion (over 8 hours each, solid green lights with no yellow). I took the low battery out and put the two new fully charged batteries in. I checked the camera and the app is showing two fully green batteries. However, when I check the “health” of the camera it shows one at 100% and the other as “add a battery”.

Here’s my phone and app data.

I’ve always had this same issue since buying and installing this system 6mths ago. And now I also have the Ring Solar Charger and it still doesn’t update the charge status in the Ring mobile app. So frustrating!

So my spotlight cam has been hooked up to the solar charger the entire time. It never dropped below 90% when checking it right at sunrise when its been on battery the longest.

For the last 3 weeks its been reporting 19% no matter what time you check it. Took the battery out charged and it flashed fully charged in 20 minutes meaning the solar charger is working. Its also continued working whereas if the battery was at 19% 3 weeks ago it would have been totally dead by now. Definitely a software bug misreading the battery.

I don’t think this problem has anything to do with the app. I have a spotlight camera with 2 battery packs and a solar panel. I have been fiddling with the solar panel. Sometimes it said there was no panel installed. Evidently the plug is really touchy – that’s a bad design. But today it was sunny all day and I had jiggled the plug so that the solar panel showed connected.

All day long, the app showed the left battery was 100% and the right battery was 92% It said the solar panel was connected and “could” charge the battery, but the 92% never changed the entire daylight time.

It didn’t matter if I rebooted my phone. The 92% never changed.

I checked it again 3 hours after dusk and it showed both batteries at 100%. I don’t think the camera updates its battery status very often. It really ought to do it every half hour or so.

========

Update: I read another post elsewhere that indicates the unit might not update anything until the next time it detects motion. In my case, it detected motion at 11AM, and not again until 6:30 PM. That is probably why I saw the 100% + 100% reading at 8PM.

Surely the camera should wake up from time to time to update its settings. Even once an hour would be better than what it does now.

I had this same issue with my Ring doorbell (2020). After charging, I noticed that the app kept saying the doorbell was still critically low on charge. I was completely baffled. Then I had idea to try ringing the doorbell to force it to realize it was charged/update its status with the app, and it worked! Not sure how you can force a camera to do something like that though…

Great tech support here. Is there a ticket system that we should be voting on this bug fix? How long has it been since this issue was brought to light? I’m sure this wasn’t the first person to bring it to your attention. How about somebody work on this issue? I feel like I’ve made a mistake going with this product over competitors. It’s not to late for me as I’ve been holding off on expanding.

Having the same issue ring door bell battery stuck at 6% on both batteries. It’s now 2022 and bug still in system.

Same issue. I have mine connected to solar, but the battery doesn’t update the charge status. The problem is that once the camera thinks it is critically low, it shuts off. If I go take the battery out and put it back in, the camera comes on and then shows it is 100% charged. This is clearly a firmware issue.

Ring Tech Support, can you please respond with an in depth response? Following this string for several months (maybe years) and I don’t see that anyone has had their problem resolved, myself included. My battery indicator for my spotlight camera is stuck at 46% on all of my mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, wife’s iphone). I have been through multiple battery charges to full capacity (I wait until the light is green, 6-8 hours after plugging in), Re-Downloaded the app, reconnected the wifi, cleared caches etc… So when I go out of town for long stretches of time, I never actually know how my battery is doing… so I just try to place a fully charged battery in every time before I go and hope for the best. I feel like this should be solvable. It’s certainly a common enough issue to get some attention.

There are screenshots of my battery percentage, the version of the ring app installed and my device info. I have done all troubleshooting. This technical issue on your end is frustrating!

Update: your system won’t even allow me to send you those screenshots. Y’all are terrible tech support!
