Mandatory Arbitration - I don't consent

I was notified that the ring terms of service now include mandatory arbitration. For information about this scummy practice, check out this article from the Economic Policy Institute. I would like to know how to opt out of this new requirement in the contract. Since Ring has stated that continuing to use your devices constitutes agreement with the new terms, I would like to know how Ring plans to compensate users who have spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on their home security systems, but now cannot use them without agreeing to new predatory terms.

I have called your customer support line several times over the last month, and been told that they cannot help, the only available recourse is in this forum. Would someone who works at Ring please reach out and FINALLY resolve this critical issue? I would like to either opt out of the arbitration clause, or receive a refund for the hardware and unused service subscription which I have paid for prior to the announcement of the new terms.

You bought the hardware, you didn’t lease it. You are free to do what you want with it as it is 100% yours and yours alone and you can continue to use them without a subscription.
As for your subscription, if you don’t want to abide by the new terms that is of course up to you. If you paid in advance, then you can ask for a refund when you cancel.

Good luck.

Obviously, allowing companies to included mandatory arbitration clauses in agreements is bad for consumers.

Have you considered:

  • Contacting elected officials and urging them to either preclude such clauses and/or make them unenforceable?
  • Contacting government agencies, departments, and/or offices that are tasked with protecting consumers and urging them to advocate for consumers on this issue?
  • Contacting various consumer groups and encouraging them to both educate consumers on the issue and to push for laws that address the problem?
