Silly Question - Devices on Chime Extender

Hi everyone, This may be a rather dumb question, but do you need to connect your devices (i.e. Doorbell) to the Ring Chime for it to get the extender to work, or does it pick this up without connecting the device to the Chime Network? Thanks!
