New solar panel not charging battery
troubleshooting

Just received a new Ring solar panel and battery.  I charged the battery by the USB cable before installing it in my 3rd gen Stick Up cam.  I connected the panel to the camera, panel is in full sun facing South.  On Ring app, it shows the half sun over the battery with lighting bolt symbol, but the battery is now at 4% causing the camera to go offline.  Earlier this morning, it was at 10%.  Under Solar Status on the Device Health screen, it shows Connected. Why isn't the battery charging?

Hi @user_ad94e1. There is a few reasons that can be causing this. First, what is the RSSI for the device? This will tell us how hard the device is working to stay online. Next, what settings do you have active? Are you using the Snapshot capture feature? How many events are you recording per day? These all play a factor in the battery life.

RSSI is currently 58.  This is a new installation location with a 1 year old camera (previously used as plug-in) so I don't have the camera on a protect plan yet, therefore, Snapshot feature/recording is not active.  Camera is at the side yard where there's no foot traffic so I had 1 motion event from when I rebooted the camera yesterday to try and troubleshoot.  It is set to Battery power mode as well. Camera right now says 28% and it's been in full South facing sun for 2 days.  Is it supposed to take this long for a new battery to charge?  Is it possible the panel is bad?

Hi @user_ad94e1. Happy to step in for Tom here. It's possible the problem could be with the Ring Solar Panel itself. Make sure it's clear of any dirt or debris, and that it's firmly connected to the Stick Up Cam. If this issue persists, I'd recommend getting in touch with our support team for further assistance.

Update: Well, after 4 full days of South-facing sun, the battery is finally at XXXX%. Even with only 1 motion sensed, that's a REALLY long time to charge. When I checked the battery status each day, seems the level of charge in the app only changed/updated suddenly when there is a big jump. After day 2, it was about 28%. On day 3, it jumped to about 68% and then on day 4 to XXXX%. So just be aware that you may encounter this same thing with a new panel/battery. For the Ring reps though, I'd still like to know if it's supposed to take this long to fully charge the battery. I'll keep an eye on it for a few days, but for now it "seems" to be working.

I'm glad to hear the battery is charging up! The Solar Panel provides a trickle charge to the battery, which is not as fast as charging it manually with the charging cable plugged into a standard power outlet. Connecting a Solar Panel is meant to help extend the amount of time between manual charges, though you may still need to charge the battery at times.
