Base station via ethernet - what effect does this have?

Installed a spotlight cam in the garden (where we've had intruders), thinking of adding a security system to inside the home. I see that the base station can be connected to my local network via ethernet rather than wifi but the online documentation doesn't explain the effects and benefits of this. If I were to connect the base station via ethernet, does this change the way it communicates with the other devices? Does the security system switch to using wifi rather than z-wave? Or does connecting the base system by ethernet only change the way I connect to the base station as a user, with z-wave still being the way the local ring network communicates? If it's the latter, what is the actual benefit of connecting the base station via ethernet? My home and back garden are well covered by a combination of the ADSL/wifi router and some TP-Link powerline extenders (each of which has a powerline connection to the router, has 3 ethernet ports and acts as a wifi access point). It seems a waste to have to place enough devices to create a mesh as well.
