Ring Updates
Amazon Sidewalk will cause Ring customers to leave Ring
After spending thousands of $ to secure our home and network, I just heard that Amazon intends to allow access to OUR WIFI network without our permission. It is concerning in the extreme that Amazon is not requiring Ring system owners to OPT IN to Sidewalk, but rather that Ring system owners need to OPT OUT. We have an extensive Ring security system and a dozen Ring cameras; but with all due respect, we aren't willing for Amazon or Ring to treat OUR system as a component of your strategy for a comprehensive public survaillence network. I hope Amazon will reconsider the downsides of Sidewalk. I suspect that most of your customer base would be as opposed to Sidewalk as we are.

Marley, the other factor here is trust. I'm sure most of your customers want to feel that Ring is trustworthy, and when the company makes choices on behalf of Ring customers that those customers would be unlikely to make for themselves, there can be an erosion of trust. Not asking for customer's permission for Ring to use customer's WIFI networks in a manner that no customer likely anticipated when purchasing Ring security equipment...not exactly great optics for Ring around trust.

SMarley, The opt-out feature is NOT available per the Ring webpage instructions! I don't want to pull my cameras, but if you do not let me actually OPT-out, I will have no choice.

msrw - I just saw your post. I totally object to a capability like Sidewalk even being available. I object even more strongly that Amazon is apparently encouraging Software Developers to create software/programming that utilizes this capability. In the past, I read news articles that strongly implied that the capability would be turned on by default for some/all Ring customers. If true, it would obviously constitute an extreme violation of privacy/security/trust (as well as a case of theft). Why would anyone want someone to "use" (or worse yet "steal") something you were paying for... and use and/or give it to others? I've repeatedly attempted to obtain answers from both Ring and Amazon... to no avail. I suspect that Amazon doesn't want people to know about it... because intelligent people (who know at least a little about technology) are probably going to have serious objections. Let's face it... there is absolutely no excuse for offering this "capability" and/or for requiring Ring (and/or Amazon) customers who object to "opt out". This is a perfect example of why we need very strong privacy (and other) laws at both the state and federal level to protect people.

Making it "opt-Out" vs "Opt-In" is not respecting the customer. I did not have to say that - you know that... don't you?

Programming the default setting of this "feature" to be "opt-in" would not only be disrespectful, but abusive. Unfortunately, Ring and Amazon are probably hoping that most customers: * Will not know the setting exists * Will not notice if the setting is "turned on", by default * Will not understand the dangers of the feature being "turned on" This points out why it very important for consumers to look out for each other. Thus, if the feature is, indeed, turned on by default at any point, even for a brief period, one has to hope there is a huge negative response from consumers, reviewers, news organizations, government officials, etc.

I will be removing all Amazon Ring related devices from my home. I followed the instructions provided to opt out, and guess what? It's not there. I can't opt out of this. This is a disgusting overstep.

PYou're not seeing the Amazon Sidewalk settings section in the Control Center section of the app or web interface?

HI don’t have the slider to opt out for my devices. Just like the previous post we have many ring devices which do show up as enabled for sidewalk but no way to opt out. I have the most updated iOS on phone and I tried logging in from my laptop too and still don’t see that option. Pretty disappointed to say the least

FIf you have an older IPhone, you do not have an iOS high enough to see the option. We all have iPhones that will not upgrade to iOS 14, which is a requirement in the instructions for opting out. Lower iOS...no opt out option😡😡😡
