Request for Improved VPN and Threat Protection Compatibility for Ring App
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the current incompatibility between the Ring app and VPN services, specifically about NordVPN and its Threat Protection feature on iOS devices. As privacy-conscious users, we rely on VPNs and threat protection tools to safeguard our personal data and online activity. However, we have discovered that the Ring app does not function reliably when VPN or threat protection services are enabled. On iOS, there is no option for split tunneling or app-based exceptions, meaning we must fully disable our VPN or threat protection to receive Ring notifications or access live video. This undermines both our privacy and our home security, forcing us to choose between two essential protections. Our specific concerns are as follows:1. Lack of VPN/App Exception Support:There is no way to allow the Ring app to bypass VPN or threat protection on iOS, due to both Ring’s network policies and iOS platform limitations. This is particularly problematic for users who wish to maintain a minimum level of threat protection without sacrificing security notifications.2. Blocking of VPN IP Addresses:Even when using a fixed/static VPN IP, Ring’s systems may still block access, with no option for users to whitelist their own secure connections.3. Privacy and Security Trade-offs:Forcing users to disable VPN or threat protection exposes them to greater risk, especially in environments where digital privacy is critical (e.g., during civil unrest or when traveling).4. Lack of Transparency and Alternatives:There is insufficient documentation or communication from Ring regarding these limitations and no roadmap for addressing the needs of privacy-focused users.5. Impact on Vulnerable Communities:LGBTQ+ and other at-risk groups often depend on both physical and digital security tools. The inability to use VPNs with Ring disproportionately impacts those who require enhanced privacy and resilience.Requested Solutions:- Development of a secure, user-configurable allow-list for VPN/static IP addresses.- Improved support for split tunneling or app-based exceptions, particularly on iOS.- Transparent communication regarding VPN compatibility and future plans.- Collaboration with leading VPN providers to ensure mutual compatibility and user safety. We hope Ring will recognize the importance of supporting privacy tools alongside home security and will prioritize solutions that allow users to maintain both digital and physical safety.Thank you for your attention to these concerns. We look forward to your response and to seeing progress on this issue.

I too am not able to use my Ring due to VPN. I've made ring CS aware of the issue. They advised they would open an investigation case and get back to me. I do not feel safe that I was advised to turn off my VPN every time there is motion at my door. That's insanity. What's the point of having Ring if it won't work while I'm protecting my use on the internet.
