A new home with ring already installed

I bought a house. The previous owner had a doorbell installed. I have tried to use it myself but I can’t get anyone to help me. They said I have to unscrew and completely uninstall the doorbell.  It is almost 2025! There was obviously an account here, the electric company, gas company, water company, they can all change things over with a phone call. Why can’t ring?
