Hardwiring Checklist: Video Doorbell Pro
The [Video Doorbell Pro](https://ring.com/products/video-doorbell-pro), requires voltage from wiring as its primary source of power. When power from wiring is the only method to power a device, it’s crucial to ensure there is an optimal flow of voltage to your Doorbell. It is important to know that a **16v to 24v AC** transformer is required for powering the Doorbell Pro, however, your power supply is not the only component in your wiring setup. Below is a list of some common and not so common power-related factors I have come across during different installations in my friends and families homes: **If the steps in this post seem too advanced or unfamiliar to you, hiring a licensed electrician is recommended.** * **Transformer Rating.** Our Doorbell Pro is recommended to be hardwired to a transformer or power supply with a minimum reading of 16 VAC 30 VA. Check out our [Wiring Diagrams](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022454432-Wiring-Diagrams-for-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro-Setup) which will list a recommended transformer rating as well as show you how to wire this setup. **(Note: Make sure not to use a transformer any higher than a 40VA as this is not advised.)** * **Need a Transformer?** We have a [16V AC at 30 VA transformer](https://ring.com/collections/accessories/products/hardwired-transformer) available on our accessories page at Ring.com. * **Using an existing chime kit (mechanical/digital)?** An existing chime kit will **require** the installation of the [Pro Power Kit](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005974286-How-to-Install-Pro-Power-Kit-V2-for-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro), and the internal chime kit should be on our [Chime Compatibility List](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/209028546-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro-Chime-Kit-Compatibility-List) for the Doorbell Pro. * **Bypassing an existing chime kit or chime kit incompatible?** The Pro Power Kit can be used in [bypass mode](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005974466-How-to-Bypass-your-Internal-Doorbell-with-the-Pro-Power-Kit-V2-for-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro-), and a [Ring Chime](https://ring.com/collections/accessories/products/chime-gen2) can be used for transmitting your Doorbell’s chimes throughout the home. * **Starting new with no existing wiring?** Consider our [Plug-In Adapter](https://ring.com/collections/accessories/products/plug-in-adapter) as a convenient powering solution and alternative. * **Questions about your wire type?** Please ensure you’re using a standard 18 to 20 gauge wiring, as seen in this [Help Center Article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041807292-Selecting-the-Correct-Wire-Gauge-when-Wiring-a-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro). Remember, the longer the length of wire is from transformer to Doorbell Pro, the more distance power must travel. Older, frayed, corroded wiring or crossed and loose wires at the mounting location can also impact performance and chime kit functionality. * **Wiring at mounting location** . Before connecting the wires to the back of your Doorbell Pro, please ensure there is no debris, corrosion, fraying, or crossing of wires. If wiring is short and barely reaching your Doorbell Pro, try using the included wiring and connectors to extend their reach. *Installing a Ring Pro in Europe looks a little different; make sure to check out our [Help Center Article](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115000148786-Ring-Video-Doorbell-Pro-European-Version) for details on installation and intended use in Europe.* I hope this checklist was helpful to you. This is the personal checklist I run through when setting up my own device and helping friends and family members with their device. Although, if at any point these steps become too advanced, hiring an electrician is always a great way to ensure optimal power and proper installation. I recommend contacting one if any of this is out of your comfort level. *Please note: The Moderators Corner is a place for moderators to post tips for using Ring devices. 1. Disconnect your doorbell's "Transformer" wire . 2. Use the wire clips to connect the "Transformer" wire to the white wire on the Wire Harness. 3. Connect the blue end of the white wire to the "Transformer" terminal on your bell. 4. Secure the Pro Power Kit inside of your bell, but don't let it get in the way of the moving parts.
