Ring Desktop App Discontinuation
Hey neighbors. We wanted to thank you so much for your continued feedback in regards to the desktop app and Ring.com. We are going to continue to fine-tune the tools and features that our neighbors have come to love about the Ring desktop app to ensure that you can still enjoy the functionality of Ring on your desktop, from Ring.com. We strongly encourage you to use [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) due to the planned deprecation of the desktop apps for both Windows and Mac and them no longer receiving updates. This will provide the best experience to manage your devices while we continue to work on Ring.com. We are exploring how we can support additional web browsers such as Firefox and Safari, as well as browser notifications across all support platforms to ensure you get alerted of what's happening at your location. We are working hard to improve the web experience so that we can support all of our products, features and integrations from your desktop computer, leaving you with more options and control over your devices from Ring.com in comparison to the previous desktop app experience. With this change in mind, we would like to highlight key features that **are currently available** on [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) that are not available via the desktop app: * [Subscription management](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022109431-Changing-your-Payment-Method-Updating-or-Canceling-your-Ring-Protect-Plan) * [Control Center](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038142272-Ring-Control-Center-Information) * [Mode Settings](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360036107792-Control-All-your-Ring-Devices-with-Modes) (for Alarm and Cameras) * Alarm and Smart Lighting Event History * Access to all devices * *Desktop app has not supported new Ring devices [after February 2021](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/204384784-Downloading-and-Updating-the-Ring-App)* Going forward, we want you to know that in the coming months we are **looking to bring the following features** to [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) in the future: * Browser notifications for Chrome, Firefox * *Safari support will come late 2022* * Additional browsers supported for Live View (Firefox, Safari) * Device Health information for your devices We will make sure to keep neighbors updated on the official removal of the desktop app in the future, and appreciate your patience while we work on the best experience for our neighbors. Please feel free to leave any additional comments or feedback in regards to this below, and any features you are looking for in the future, share in our [Feature Request Board here](https://community.ring.com/c/products/24). Thank you, neighbors! **NOTE**: This announcement **only applies to desktop app users** and not mobile app users. The mobile app will not be altered or impacted from this change.

Discontinuing the desktop app for Mac is a terrible idea, just as it was in 2021 when you were forced to back away from the decision after users protested in an uproar. Despite your claims, the web-based app is not as useful as the desktop app. I receive notifications in the desktop app but not the browsers version, even when I enabled all the settings you specify to receive such notifications on the web-based app. Please reconsider the decision to eliminate the desktop app. Amazon, who owns Ring, can surely afford to give customers a choice that suits them best between the desktop app and your web app.

It's been three weeks since my last post, meaning it's been three weeks of daily testing of the web app. I'd like to reiterate that web app push notifications DO NOT WORK in Safari on Mac. It has worked once or twice while I had Safari active and I was staring at the Ring dashboard while I had someone walk out in front of my cameras, but it has never worked while Safari was minimized while I was working in my company's apps. Not only that, I have to log in, authenticate myself, enable push notifications multiple times to get the "enable push notifications" to change to "enabled" status on a daily basis. Without the Ring desktop app, the Ring security system will quickly become a toy. I'm not saying this to be facetious. I'm not saying this because I want to "stick it to the man." Seriously, I'm saying this for no other reason than pure FACT. The Ring's web app does not function anywhere near how a security system should work. It is simply an expensive toy. Ring, I'm sure you have your reasons, I'm sure you have your agenda, but let's not kid anyone, you're shamelessly junking the Ring system. I, for one, refuse to pay for junk. Once my year is up, I'm taking down my cameras.

Having to have an entire browser open just to have one tab open, all the clicks, no. Sun setting the desktop app instead of making it work was a stupid move. I got my whole neighborhood to get Ring years ago but now I’m ditching it. You all took away the point of a security app. Quick access is not possible with it all being in the browser instead of in the menu bar. You’ve lost another customer. And more when I start promoting a better alternative to the community.

My gripes with the browser based app, that it’s not easy to use when you want delete numerous videos. One has to write down the date and time, switch to manage, find all the dates and time to tick to delete. On the desktop app you could just right click and delete the ones not needed. Maybe I’m daft to think I should save space on the Ring servers, by deleting the loads of videos of cats that pass my cameras each day. Unless Ring browser app will have a right click to delete, I’m giving up my good deed.
