Subject: Concern Regarding Favorited Video Expiration vs. Shared Video Retention Hello Ring Community, I’d like to bring attention to a serious issue I recently encountered involving how Ring prioritizes video retention. My vehicle was stolen on December 15, 2024, and the theft was captured by my Ring camera. I favorited the video, downloaded it, and later edited that copy. Recently, I attempted to re-download the original favorited video directly from the Ring app but discovered it was no longer available—having passed the 60-day retention limit. What I found troubling is this: shared videos appear to be stored indefinitely, as I still have access to a video I shared back in 2022. However, favorited videos—arguably more important from a user perspective—are subject to automatic deletion after the retention window, with no clear warning or override option. The loss of this video is detrimental to my ongoing legal efforts to press charges against the individual responsible for stealing my vehicle. Had I known that sharing a video preserves it indefinitely, I would have done that in addition to favoriting. I believe Ring should strongly reconsider its data retention policy: Favorited videos should either trigger indefinite storage or prompt users before deletion. Users should be clearly notified of impending deletions—even for favorited content. Shared and favorited content should follow consistent, user-prioritized retention logic. I hope this feedback reaches the appropriate team, and I welcome any guidance if there’s still a way to recover the original video from Ring’s servers. Thank you, Roberto Paco Garcia
