Ring Updates
Ring Desktop App Discontinuation
Hey neighbors. We wanted to thank you so much for your continued feedback in regards to the desktop app and Ring.com. We are going to continue to fine-tune the tools and features that our neighbors have come to love about the Ring desktop app to ensure that you can still enjoy the functionality of Ring on your desktop, from Ring.com. We strongly encourage you to use [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) due to the planned deprecation of the desktop apps for both Windows and Mac and them no longer receiving updates. This will provide the best experience to manage your devices while we continue to work on Ring.com. We are exploring how we can support additional web browsers such as Firefox and Safari, as well as browser notifications across all support platforms to ensure you get alerted of what's happening at your location. We are working hard to improve the web experience so that we can support all of our products, features and integrations from your desktop computer, leaving you with more options and control over your devices from Ring.com in comparison to the previous desktop app experience. With this change in mind, we would like to highlight key features that **are currently available** on [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) that are not available via the desktop app: * [Subscription management](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022109431-Changing-your-Payment-Method-Updating-or-Canceling-your-Ring-Protect-Plan) * [Control Center](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038142272-Ring-Control-Center-Information) * [Mode Settings](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360036107792-Control-All-your-Ring-Devices-with-Modes) (for Alarm and Cameras) * Alarm and Smart Lighting Event History * Access to all devices * *Desktop app has not supported new Ring devices [after February 2021](https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/204384784-Downloading-and-Updating-the-Ring-App)* Going forward, we want you to know that in the coming months we are **looking to bring the following features** to [Ring.com](http://ring.com/) in the future: * Browser notifications for Chrome, Firefox * *Safari support will come late 2022* * Additional browsers supported for Live View (Firefox, Safari) * Device Health information for your devices We will make sure to keep neighbors updated on the official removal of the desktop app in the future, and appreciate your patience while we work on the best experience for our neighbors. Please feel free to leave any additional comments or feedback in regards to this below, and any features you are looking for in the future, share in our [Feature Request Board here](https://community.ring.com/c/products/24). Thank you, neighbors! **NOTE**: This announcement **only applies to desktop app users** and not mobile app users. The mobile app will not be altered or impacted from this change.

This is a **very** bad idea. I use my desktop app much more than the app on my devices. On the desktop I can enlarge the video to the point I can actually see it, something that is not possible on my iPhone. Please seriously consider what it is you're doing to people without 30 year old eyes and 20/20 vision.

DI'd echo hi808's message. I work at my Mac much of the day. It's more convenient to answer the door when someone rings without having to get the iPhone out of my pocket. I decided to replace my old Doorbell 1 with a new Doorbell 4, as he old doorbell lost its ability to detect motion some years back. And I found out today that the Mac app doesn't know about the Doorbell 4. The browser log in is not a substitute for a working desktop app. And I have a suspicion that testing the browser version today disconnected my new doorbell from the Chime Pro. Not yet sure about that. Either way, my options are to use the iPhone only, or I may reinstate the Doorbell 1 and return the Doorbell 4.

I'm sure that desktop users have many questions. Listed below are a few to start off the discussion. Ring Windows (and MAC) desktop users obviously need quickly accessible, easy-to-use, full-featured, secure access to Ring content, settings, and account information. * In the future, will desktop users be required to use the current login process (i.e., username, password, and 2FA) every time they access Ring.com? * Are there plans to duplicate ALL of the features found in Ring mobile apps for desktop users (including those who use Firefox and/or Safari browsers)? For example, currently, if you attempt to use the Firefox browser on a Windows device, you will probably find you have NO access to MOST content, some of which includes: - Video clips listed in a History List - Live View - ANYTHING relating to devices that use End-to-End Encryption * Ring desktop users will presumably want to be able to view Live View and video clips in as large (and high resolution) a fashion as possible. - Will users be able to view video in Full Screen mode? - Will there be any “zoom” capability for video clips? * The OP listed links to only four threads. Is it safe to assume that the many comments in all posts in all threads relating to Desktop apps, Ring.com, web apps, etc. have been carefully reviewed and taken into account even though only four threads were listed?

UDiscontinuing the desktop app is idiotic. This was the selling point for me from the beginning. I DO NOT want to use a small phone screen and I want to be able to save videos to my PC in order to easily email videos to LEA, etc. Now I get something along the line that my browser cannot load one of my camera's video is in HVEC format and is not supported. BS! I saved videos from both floodlight cameras and they were BOTH in MP4 format. Now I can't view "Live" video from the Dashboard tab. The app wants me to log in again but the dialog box fields are 'grayed out' and won't allow logging into it. Whisky Tango Foxtrot? I am PAYING FOR A FUNCTIONAL ENVIRONMENT! My money is being taken and I'm not getting what I've been paying for for years! I consider this fraud and a scam. I will find an alternative and cancel this service and never recommend this product line and service as well as post this in the review sections. I don't trust Ring at all anymore. I will setup a Linux system and use these cameras there. What MAGAT came along and decided this was a good idea? Anything to ram, jam, cram and shove some A-Hole's sadistic ideas up anyone's and everyone's orifice so they can giggle with a rotten toddler's frame of mind and source of amusement. Fire the miscreant that came up with this and hire someone with a responsible and reasonable sense of character. Give us back what we have been paying for!

CI totally agree with user51904. I keep trying to use the "new" way Ring wants us to access live alerts and none of it works. The simple, straightforward desktop app did it all. The web-based app doesn't work and Ring knows it (despite their false claims and bogus instructions). I was just billed for another year of service. It's a money grab. Amazon (who owns Ring) makes so much money they think they can ignore the voice of the customer. Eventually, they'll pay the cost for such arrogance and ineptitude. "Stay away from Ring" is what I will tell anyone who asks.

@Chelsea_Ring I just want to reach out strongly urging you to reconsider. Our family shares a vacation to to which last year I recently added a few Ring Security Cameras. This was done after careful consideration reviewing multiple competitors offerings. One of the major deciding factors was the support of a native Windows application. The majority of my family's members are 60 & up. Unlike the younger generation they do NOT carry their phones with them at all times, and usually they are off with a dead battery. What they do keep on within earshot most of the time though is their laptop computer. I went with the Ring product because I knew the Windows 10 Desktop App would give them an easy way to access the security cameras and be alerted of activity. Now you are taking away this convenience from us with no viable replacement solution as the current web portal does not offer notifications. I am requesting you extend support to the desktop app, even if it lacks many new features, until you have a 1:1 replacement. If not I'll probably be returning or re-selling my Ring cameras and replacing them with a competitors brand that does offer these features. Thank you,

BThis is probably the end for me and Ring. I work on the third floor of my house. I want to be alerted when something goes on, but I don't want to have these alerts on my phone when I'm sitting by the front door. So alas. It was fun while it lasted. Bye.

Please reconsider discontinuing the Ring Mac app. I use it daily for as it is more assessable for me in answering the doorbell. My smart phone is not assessable for this as it requires several steps before I can view the video. I rely on smart home technology including this doorbell to be able to live independently at home.

But why on earth are you discontinuing the desktop app? Makes no sense, especially with more people working from home these day? It's nice to have the live view on my secondary monitor as I work without having to switch to my phone or log into the website.
