An API for Protect Plan subscribers

It is whispered that Ring does not have an open API because it wants to make mony off the Protect Plan. So, why not make an API available only for Protect Plan subscribers? The Ring Protect Plan is great for saving videos. But for a decent integration into smarthome systems like Domoticz or Home Assistant, at least being able to take snapshots from the doorbell camera over the local network should be available. If not via an API, then some other way?
