Ring Break Glass Detector went off for something not glass related
glass-break-sensor

The alarm was set to home and armed and I have two ring glass break detectors installed at the front and back of the house. A plastic handled broom fell over on the tiled floor and this has somehow managed to set the alarm off. How has that happened? It's not glass and doesn’t sound like glass breaking at all, yet it’s somehow set the broken  glass detector off with it falling on the floor! It’s a bit concerning if something can fall over like a broom against a wall and set off a glass detector. I was under the impression that Rings glass break detectors were programmed to specifically detect the sound of broken glass only, but clearly this isn’t the case.

Hi @JamesE. I recommend making sure your Glass Break Sensor is installed correctly. It has to be placed within twenty-five feet of glass windows or doors that it is intended to monitor and has to be placed seven feet from ground up. If it is installed correctly and it's still causing false alarms, give our support team a call for further assistance.

The sound of breaking glass has changed a lot in recent years. A large Argon filled double-glazed unit broke recently in my conservatory. I was there, and it sounded nothing like breaking a pane of glass. In fact there was hardly any noise on the initial break, the noise came from the sound of the glass falling. My Glass Break Sensor picked this up and reported it correctly. The Glass Break Sensor is basically a tuned microphone, nothing more. So anything of sufficient volume in the frequency range expected by the sensor will set the alarm off. I see you have the sensors armed when you are Home. I would suggest you have them disarmed when Home and Armed for the reason set out above (any noise in the frequency range could set off the alarm, especially music). Home and Armed should only really utilise Contact Sensors, all other sensors (PIR and Glass Break) should not be armed.  Only use PIR and Glass Break in Away Mode.

That would render them absolutely pointless then, as burglars still break in when people are at home. A microphone can be programmed to pick up the right frequencies for broken glass across the various types and thicknesses. A plastic handle sounds nothing like breaking glass though.

You have clearly missed my point. The sound of breaking glass is now wide and broad. The sound of a single pane of standard 4mm glass is completely different to the sound of an argon filled double glaze pane as I can attest to first-hand. I disagree, the sound of a plastic handle falling onto a floor could very well be in a similar frequency range of breaking glass and the proof is that your Sensor agrees with me by setting off the alarm. Without repeating myself, I agree with you on one point, it seems the Glass Break Sensor is not for you as if you cannot hear the sound of breaking glass when you are at home, you need to rethink your security completely.

I think you have may have missed my point, the point being that a glass break sensor should only pick up glass breaks otherwise it’s not a glass break sensor. It’s an everything break sensor that can be set off by anything.  That’s my point. It should be more fine tuned.

Well I could repeat myself that "glass break" covers a wide frequency range now, but I'm exhausted trying. I suppose that's why it can be turned off when you are at home, but again, repeated ad-infinitum. You seem to be alone in your problem. I have three glass break sensors that cause me zero issues since purchasing them when they were first released. But then I have them set up correctly.
