Alarm panel (gen 2) - always keep light on for current status

I tried searching and couldn't find this, but it surprises me that even hardwired, the alarm panel doesn't constantly show the current alarm status. If I'm across the room about to open the back slider door, I'm used to just glancing for a red or green light on my old alarm. Now I have to walk close enough to trip the motion sensor for the panel to light up. I appoligize if I'm missing a setting here, becuase I swear my friends system does this (gen1), but I've tinkered around and didn't have any luck. I've checked to make sure firmware is up to date.
