Why do you get charged prorated initial fee with no warning?

I have recently paid for an annual subscription and then without warning had a message to say I had been charged for a prorated initial fee of £49.08 which I had no idea about. So in total have paid £100 for the year for basic plan when it said £49.99 for the year?
