Wired Ring Doorbell not Triggering Original Chime

Eight point: If you have the Ring Video Door Bell 2 (not pro) it will not activate your old mechanical chime, or any other internal bell. There is no setting in the app to fix that. It is a defect in design and Ring refused to address it. A simple test is to touch the two wires coming to your button together - if you internal chime rings - all good there and positive evidence that the Ring button is not making the connection between the terminals on the back. Camera operation through your internet connection, nothing to do with wiring. There are a number of different Ring systems, to be clear I am referring only to “Ring Video Door Bell 2” - not to be confused with any other models that may work just fine. Also, mine are 2019 vintage and ring may have fixed this problem in more current models.

I am not familiar with Gen 2 but if it does not work, then it must be the same as the ones I have, Ring Video Door Bell 2.

All a diode does is to limit the current flow to one direction, not going to fix your problem.

Thank you so much!!! This worked for the Ring Doorbell 3!! No need to buy any extra parts. Just go to the app in device settings and set your chime.

Thanks for posting that information so others with the _ Ring 3 _ will know that it works. Those of us that have the _ Ring Video Door Bell 2 _ are stuck with a device that will not work as advertised.

HI,

My hardwired Ring doorbell use to ring our house’s orginal doorbell. Lately no matter what I’ve tried, I can not get the Ring doorbell to chime the existing doorbell in our house. If our phones are on silent we miss our doorbell being rung. I have tried to touch the two wires together and that makes the existing doorbel ring…however when I hardwire them back to the Ring doorbell it no longer rings the house’s doorbell and it no longer says hardwired in the device health. Any help to solve this problem would be great! Thanks!

I found the way to get the indoor chime to work for my Ring Video Doorbell 2: In the app, select Menu (upper left), Devices, Front Door (or waht ever you called yours), Device Settings, In Home Chime Settings, Advanced Settings, Chime Type, Mechanical, Ring In-Home Chime On.

The app for ring video doorbell 2 does not have that option in the menu. You obviously have a different model, perhaps the ring video doorbell 2 pro.

Did you ever get a reply to this issue. I have the same problem. At one time it worked but I reconnected it in mounting change and now it doesn’t work.

My issue is with Ring Video Door Bell 2 - specifically and exactly that model. Due to a design flaw, it will never work to ring and existing mechanical chime. If your’s worked at on time, then you must not have this model. Changing the mount should not have affected it unless you have a wire lose or broke off.

Hard to belive that your existing chime is “off” by default. It worked before installing my Ring Doorbell 3, but would not after installation. I had to dig through the setup and found the section in setup to choose turing on my existing chime. Works now. Lots of time wasted checking wires, existing hallway chime, Ring Web site.

I have the same problem with my Ring Video Doorbell 2, it used to be working, and stop working recently. Trying to find the below workaround in the app, but my Ring app does not have ‘In Home Chime Settings’ under ‘Device Settings’ section. Is something wrong with the Ring App? just update the Ring App yesterday.

Workaround posted by others: select Menu (upper left), Devices, Front Door (or waht ever you called yours), Device Settings, In Home Chime Settings, Advanced Settings, Chime Type, Mechanical, Ring In-Home Chime On.

Has anyone at Ring ever replied to the issue of the doorbell not providing closure on the existing chime wire? I am having this issue also and I am sure that it worked at one time. It has now stopped ringing my existing chime. It is definitely a function of the Ring 2 because shorting the lead wired to the Ring 2 cause the chime to ring.

Does Ring care about this issue?

If you have specifically a Ring Video Door Bell 2 - It will never work and ring does not care. Some other models will work, but not this one.

It’s highly unlikely your Ring Video Door Bell 2 (exactly that model) has ever worked. There is no setting in the app that will fix the problem and Ring will not provide a solution. Live with it or buy another door bell. I have enough phones and iPads around the house - all set to notify when there is activity that I have learned to live with it as I hear those devices and get by without the internal chime. If there was a solution, one would think that a Ring tech would jump in here and post something or at least defend themselves. In my opinion, there isn’t a fix short of a new device, that’s why there are no solutions provided by Ring. Too bad for those of us that purchased them in good faith.

Mine was working fine for less than 2 years, but my neighbors who installed same model as mine at same day are still working fine. I think it could be a hardware issue with Ring itself. It does not establish the circuit connection when push button. If install Ring app on multiple phones, will all phones get notified?

Why is it that no one else, incluiding me and I have two of them, have ever gotten a ring Video door bell 2 to work? Post a picture of your device, including the back showing the connections.

Thank you, this is the closest to my issue, and a wonderful fix. I too have a Ring Doorbell 2 (also known as a 2nd Generation). I suspect these are to be phased out soon. Regardless, I have had one on my front door for the last 4 years. The Ring unit connected to my mechanical bell just fine from the inital installation. These last two weeks, I have had issues. with it no longer ringing my mechanical bell. I did a reset of the Ring device and it worked for a little while. However, as of last week it no longer rang my mechanical bell, and the response time to my app was very slow. Checking with the app, it showed that my Ring was on battery, and no longer showing hardwire. Like everyone else I confirmed connections, check AC voltage on the bell wires, and confirmed that touching the two wires together made the mechanical bell rang. This is the Ring unit that DOES NOT have the mechanical setting in the app. After taking the Ring unit completely apart, I can confirm that I have the same issues as everyone else, that one of the pins seem to be shorter that the other and that could be the issue with the board not getting good contact with the external terminals connected to the bell wires. I went with the aluminum foil option, as that would be the most simple. I did the modifications as suggested, closed the unit, attached it back to the wall. After a few minutes the phone app detected my Ring doorbell camera 2 just fine. The Device Health now shows it is Hardwired, and most importantly, the Ring device works, and it rings my mechanical bell too.

I think that the fact that my front door faces the sun most of the day, and the heat may have caused the plastic shell of the Ring doorbell to expand. As it is I have had to change the mounting screws to longer ones as well.

Regardless, thanks for this fix.

Is it possible to let me know the exact type of bridge rectifier and the link to the YouTube video ?

Thank you!!!

I have spent an hour looking for a solution and finally called support. That was a waisted excercise. I had already trieded of the fixes/suggestions in the tutorials. Although the rectifier bridge and transformer are a reasonable fix, I do not have the space to store them unless I cut out some of my external wall. Too extreme for a doorbell. Bottom line if the diode does not do the trick, it is likely the chime is not compatible. According to Ring. Ring’s resolution was to send me the list of comparable chime to purchase. Disappointing to say the least. A new door chime will be the next step!
