Possible workaround to recurring network setup issue with cameras & doorbells

When setting up Ring doorbells and cameras using iPhone I always run into a problem during the network setup whether or not the Ring device is using WiFi or PoE. The error occurs at the point where the setup program tries to test the internet connection between your iPhone and your camera or doorbell. I discovered that the network setup works more smoothly if you start the Ring device setup with the iPhone initially disconnected from the network the camera will be using for internet access. To do this you’ll have to configure the WiFi on your iPhone to Forget this Network (in Settings) for your home WiFi network. Do not turn off WiFi on your iPhone, just disconnect from your home WiFi network.

The Ring setup establishes a private point-to-point WiFi connection between your iPhone and the Ring device to configure the device. After all device settings are established the Ring setup will prompt you to verify the full internet connection between your iPhone and the Ring device. For some reason, if your iPhone knows about your home WiFi network it will often fail the verification. On the other hand, if you wait until the Ring setup gets to the point where it asks you to verify the internet connection before you reactivate your iPhone’s connection to your home WiFi network the verification seems to work more reliably the first time.

If your iPhone is connected to your home WiFi network when you start the Ring setup the iPhone seems to have difficulty automatically switching between the private WiFi network the Ring setup program uses and your home WiFi network. Waiting until the Ring setup program asks you to verify the full internet connection to connect to your home WiFi network seems to fix the problem, but the only way to keep your iPhone from switching networks at the wrong point in the process is to have it forget your home WiFi network. Of course make sure you know your home WiFi network password before telling your iPhone to forget your network.
