Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

Re: Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

Yea, totally NOT resolved.

I have had better times with it, but half the time its because I've forgotten I've turned motion zones off...because they refuse to add (unless i'm missing something) a quick kill switch to disable/enable motions zones. I have to tap the app icon, tap the device, tap motion settings, tap motion zones, tap zone one, tap to uncheck or check it, then tap zone 2, tap to uncheck or check it, then tap done, then tap to access the open apps panels, then swipe to close the app.

11 taps or gestures just to simply disable two motion zones. One kill switch on the dashboard to do this would sure be easy, but that's not where we live in Ringland. It's funny, I actually gave this device a generous 3 of 5 as I recall on Amazon and Ring emailed and "wanted to help me resolve my issues". Almost funny if it wasn't so pathetic. I gave it an "it's OK" rating, and that's generous, because it IS actually a camera...it's got that going on for it.

But the other day, out of the blue, I could not even get to the motion zones screen to enable or disable. For quite a while I could disable them as I load my truck so I don't have a bunch of unnecessary recordings to have to delete, then once out of range I could enable them to see whats happening when I'm gone. Nope, all of the sudden not working outside of wifi on cell data, another known problem in another thread. But totally out of the blue.

I digressed, yes...this seems to be more of a place for us to complain than get real issues resolved, so thanks for reading.

Back to the subject. I haven't had small animal alerts recently, but that could be due to the high number of times I forget to turn the zones back on, or maybe there just haven't been small animals. But floating debris in the air, a spider, and the movement of the spider webs sets it off, you know, because it looks so much like a person. And interestingly, it didn't go off when my stepson came to do some laundry, he was carrying a basket. But when he wasn't carrying the basket, it did recognize him as a "people". I guess I cant complain, a person with a laundry basket is not the normal human form!

If only there was a cars and people only mode!

People Only mode never really did much to resolve the false detections for me..... it just picked up everything and sometimes missed detecting "People"

The sun is shining today and its perfect sun shadow weather Smiley LOL  So the front drive camera is on the lowest motion sensitivity mode - with people mode off - lets see what happens Smiley Embarassed

Update

Ok well i am deflated.... i thought there would be an improvement but nope the people shadows strike again, also had a magpie trigger a motion alert.  The thing is the sun isnt directly hitting the Camera so its not even like its glare from the sun at all.

I am going to give it a few more days and see what happens - i will update Support on this also.

I spoke to support and they contacted a "Lead" and the "Advanced Team" - They remotley accessed and "rolled back the firmware" (If you recall i reported on here that i was told a firmware update broke the motion detection and they issued a firmware update to roll it back, well my cameras never did).  I then gave them 24hrs access to some of my camera feeds for observations to see if this rollback worked.

Its been a few hours now and i have not had any false alerts so far on any of the cameras Smiley Indifferent  It is still light here and will await to see what the night holds for them.

They have asked me to update them via email after 24hrs (but we all agreed 24hrs was not enough time to judge anything) - depending on the update they may try another 24hrs with "people only" mode turned off.

I kinda think its working now, but i then keep reminded myself its going to play up again.  But i am willing to give it go #faith and hopefully have a better update in a few days Smiley Tongue

Update

Ok so compared to the high number of false alerts i usually get from all the camera's....

Garage Cam - no false alerts recordings (i have notifications off anyway) - not even picked up the smoke coming fron the boiler flu which it usally does

Garden Cam - No false alert recordings (i have notifications off anyway) - Unless the rodents and birds have gone on into hibernation.

Drive Cam - Had 1 false alert (i have notifications on) - it seems it was the lights from a car that came from the side not directly onto the camera - This cam usually gives off the most false alerts so this is major progress.

One thing i did notice though that there was a longer delay in getting motion notifications then usual - sometimes upto 2 mins after the event - this didnt happen before so will keep an eye on this and provide updates to Support.

So from the looks of things as they are whatever RING did seems to have fixed the false alerts.....? Smiley Tongue But understand I am still in the testing phase and i need to provide them with an update on progress still.

Update

Front Camera - So after a few days of lower than usual false motion alerts, things went a little side ways as started to get some people shadow alerts and then more car lights coming from the side (about 50ft away from the camera).

The garden cam picked up the darn rat a few times again!

The garage cam has remained false motion free!

So i have been emailing my updates and then i stopped getting replies to them, i forwarded my findings to the Distributions & Sales Manager and to Jamie the Inventor.... pleased to say both of them responded to me very quickly!

I have a call scheduled on Monday ( I think with the special ops team).

The other strange thing i noticed was that for one of the cameras a firmware version suddenly appeared where it normally says "Up to Date" - v2.1.01005 and has remained visable.

when i first got these replacements it showed the firmware version - v1.16.00265 and then they all changed to "Up to Date".

Update

I am still working on the motion dectection issues with an assigned agent , i have had 2 conference calls since the last update and have another scheduled for next week.

Even though the false alerts have reduced, they still seem to pick up things i would not expect them to pick up...... however i am starting to realise tha these are in fact cameras Smiley Surprised relying on software to do the job of a human eye!

What i have been told is that when you first set up the cameras and work on setting up your motion zones (for those cameras that are able to be adjusted size and shape wise), the camera takes an image/inprint of the area.  Depending on where you have drawn out your zones when anythings croses those zones the software starts to identify changes to the original scan it took, it then trys to work on algorithyms of differentiation's covering size, level of heat and level of movement.  It then makes a judgement call on alerting or not!

So even though there maybe false alerts as in non human/people, the cameras are doing the jopb they are supposed to do baring in mind they are not a human eye.

I have been offered replacements again (but we both agreed these will not make any difference, as there is nothing wrong with the hardware), I was offered exchanges for other equipment and also as a last resort a full refund.

For the moment i have decided to continue to work with the agent ( i have to say that she has been amazing and has always called bang on time, follows up on emails etc. - so a Big Thank You to Jon Marie @ RING).

We have tried the following so far:

  • Remotley update all cameras to latest software
  • Reduced the motions zones size
  • reviewing footage - seeking advice from technical

I am currently sending any non human/people alerts to my assigned agent who will be seeking support from technical until my next call.

Re: Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

My floodlight cam has been not false alarming on small animals lately. Don't known if its the camera behaving better or just no critters to trigger it.

I'm still getting alerts and recordings of this creepy alien looking thing (snapshot attached to this post) which must be some sort of egg sack or something for the spider that has appeared after the creepy thing floats in and out of view (snapshot attached to this post).

My guess is this happens when the lights come on, because the lights trigger the camera if I don't have the stainless steel topped table within camera view covered in black plastic. Of course this leads to another known issue and that's, "why the heck are the lights coming on  so often when there is nothing that should be triggering them?". Yep, natural stuff floating in the air apparently sets the lights off, and when the lights come on and stuff floating in the air (or a spider and its creepy looking string of beads looking thing) is lit up by the lights, this activates the camera, and thus false alarms at midnight and beyond. Never 10:00 PM, always when most people are in bed.

The only way I can think to solve this is to turn the lights off. But then whats the point of a motion sensing security light that is not on?

Bottom line is, I cant count on this floodlight cam for overnight security unless I want to be woken up at random times with false triggers. All I can do is hope if a person does happen to come in to the zones, that person isn't trying to break in the house and the camera will catch the person for later action.  Otherwise, the camera is useless for real time overnight security. I can stay up all night and watch out, I don't need a camera to keep me up all night.

Ring did offer me a refund, but at this point, I am beyond any desire to take the thing down and ship it back. It's a floodlight and a camera. I had a floodlight before, but I didn't have a camera there, so its "something" more than what I had. I just don't have the security device I expected so its doing nothing for my home's safety while I sleep.

They are refunding me my year's video subscription, so that's something.

Meanwhile, over time, I'll be looking for a device that records to a DVR or computer locally to replace this with so I don't have to pay for my own recordings. If anyone has any suggestions for a system that does that AND has people only type software, please let me know. For now I can only see what may have happened (usually nothing) overnight, the next morning on recordings, if I dont want to have my sleep interrupted for false alarms.

Re: Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

Sorry, apparently you can only upload one attachment. Here is the creepy alien looking spiders string of beads looking thing.

These pictures are blurry because for some reason when you pause the video that's what happens, the objects are clearer on the video

Edit: Sorry, I didn't realize how terrible the image viewer would be, these snapshots aren't very viewable. I'm not willing to share the actual video of my place publicly  for this issue due to security preferences.

Re: Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

+1 on this, why is “people only” alerting me to birds and a tree in the wind?

I don’t want to hear all my devices telling me about motion because I let my dog out to play and my cameras are set to “PEOPLE ONLY”

Re: Motion Sensitivity picking up pets when set for People Only

I'm reporting 2 nights and days that my floodlight cam has had active motion zones and has not picked up anything other than people.  I removed the cover I had on a stainless table surface which had been triggering motion recording from its reflection (I think) and haven't gotten any of those triggered alerts either.

I did reduce my floodlight sensitivity detection distance, and this may have helped. I haven't gone out at night to determine if I'm happy with that range yet. It's been colder here this week, and that may have reduced the spider activity, but no notifications from a spider or any other random thing...for 2 days at least. That's encouraging.

I'm trying to pay more attention to my motion zones being on. I turn them off when I don't want recordings of us walking around or working outside and often forget to turn them back on...and I start thinking I'm not getting false alarms then realize that's because I've disabled the motion zones completely and forgot about them!

Update

I had my assigned agent call me yesterday as planned, so since my previous call with them last wednesday i have only had 11 false alerts (which is a massive improvement compared to the 40+ i used to get).

It still picked up a pigeon, rodent, smoke/steam coming of a exit pipe some distant away and cats, However nowhere near the amount.  For example the smoke/steam coming of an exit pipe (only in the evening) used to trigger an motion alert every time the heating boiler came on (which could be several times during the evening) it only alerted once in 7 days.

What changed?

  • I had all cameras replaced 3 times
  • Adjusted the motion zones (strange one this as before i had already spent weeks changing these to every possible way and it didnt improve) - minimised them so they are not right close to the boundaries - for those that picked up the dog in the garden i changed the size of the zones that i had placed on the entry wall/fence so lifted them up off from the bottom (no alerts from the dog anymore - but still covers the entry point - havent tested if this zone on the wall/fence actually works if someone jumped over the wall/fence!)
  • Firmware was remotley updated to the most recent version (it seemes the rolled back firmware didnt help matters)

Out of the 11 false alerts were between the hours of 9pm - 7am with only 1 being during the daylight hours.

Even though the false alerts have reduced i still have the notifications for motion turned off during the night between the hours of 10pm - 9am due to the high chance of false alerts happening during those hours.

So not perfect like most other cameras out there in the same category, but for me these cameras are being used to capture better footage at entry and exits points (areas where my static CCTV struggles to capture) rather than being alerted during the event (during the hours of 10pm - 9am) I have the RING alarm as a back up to alert me if there is an actual intruder gaining access and hope the sound of the siren is enough to scare them off Smiley Surprised.

Hopefully as time goes by software will develop/progress to reduce these false alerts during the evening down further.

I could of taken the kind offer of a refund (i might end up regretting it), but decided to keep them for now as they are good cameras!  I still have a access to the same agent if i ever need to report to if the same issues occur.

All i can suggest is that try and get an assigned agent to deal with your issue and work with them through it, now it may not fully get rid of all the false alerts but it may reduce them!

If anything changes i will update.
