Device Tips: Floodlight Cam Placement and Height

The Ring Floodlight Cam is a great outdoor security solution to see what’s happening beyond your front door. When selecting the best location for placement there are a few important things to consider when choosing where to install it. Check out the tips we have compiled below:

  • Electrician - To ensure proper installation and safety, we recommend getting a licensed professional to help with wiring and installing your Floodlight Cam.

  • Breaker Off - Always make sure the breaker is off when removing, or relocating the device.

  • Height - Mounting the device nine feet off the ground is ideal for its 270-degree motion sensing radius and 140-degree camera lens field of view to work as expected.

    • Note: The farther the Floodlight Cam is installed from the Wi-Fi router range, the harder it will be for it to stay connected. With the right Wi-Fi speeds, a Chime Pro can help with this.
  • Audio - The Floodlight Cam has two-way audio capability. If it is installed higher than the nine foot recommended installation height, it may be harder to hear the audio.

  • Eaves and Soffit - Installing the Floodlight Cam directly on an eave or soffit at a vertical angle can affect motion and light triggering as well as the camera’s view. This is because the sensors and camera will be pointed directly to the ground rather than being at the preferred angle facing out. It will likely keep it from functioning properly and recording.

    • Note: If you have a junction box installed, that creates a vertical plane for the device. This will help you achieve the ideal angle for your device.
  • Enclosed Location - If your lights are in an enclosed area with a large overhang or wall close to the light, this can cause a reflection. The glare could affect the video and possibly trigger advanced motion alerts at night from the abrupt view change when the lights turn on.

  • Switch - Many homes with an existing flood light have a light switch attached to it. It is best to avoid having Floodlight Cam connect to a switch because it can cause issues with electricity flow to the device.

    • Note: If you have to install the Floodlight Cam on a switch, it is best to put tape over the switch so it is not accidentally turned off.
  • Exterior Lights - Your Floodlights may be prevented from turning on at night during motion events if you install the camera across from or close to exterior lights. These exterior lights might be within the field of view of the camera causing it to think it’s daytime.

  • Cam Light Angles - Angling your Floodlights in the direction of where you focus your camera is important to keep the device working as expected e.g. the camera may sense motion but may not trigger lights if they are not focused on the same area.
