Question about Move and Upgrade

I have paid for a year long subscription on a Ring Pro doorbell and Ring Stickup unit. I will be moving in a few weeks, leaving my doorbell behind and taking my Stickup unit with me. I want to buy a Ring 3 doorbell for the new home. Is it possible to transfer my remaining subscription time on the doorbell over to the new unit at the new home?

Thank you!

Hello @carlidee ,

Ah, you have a few separate issues to handle with this case (a move to a new home location, leaving behind a doorbell for the new people moving in, a purchase of a new doorbell, and Ring Protect Plan changes/cancellations/additions).

You also did not mention whether your year subscription was for with the Ring Protect Plan “Basic” or “Plus” which will effect your steps to take. Ring Protect “Basic” Plan covers devices individually. Ring Protect “Plus” Plan covers all devices at one location (and covers all Ring devices at that location, provides “Extended Warranty”, and future purchase discounts).

If you have two “Basic” Plan subscriptions (one subscription on the Doorbell and another subscription of the Stick-Up cam) then you can simply cancel the subscription on the Doorbell that will be left behind and you will receive a pro-rated refund for the doorbell. The “Basic” Plan on your Stick-Up camera will still be in effect and continue for your new location. But if you have a “Plus” Plan that covers both the Doorbell that remains and the Stick-Up cam that you are taking with you, it is important that you realize the “Plus” Plans are tied to the location. You will have to purchase a new “Plus” plan for your new home location. This new “Plus” subscription then will start immediately upon purchase for your new home location, and then Ring can refund the pro-rated subscription left on your old location “Plus” Plan. Here is a link with more detailed Subscription Plan information:

https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022109431-Upgrading-Changing-or-Canceling-your-Ring-Protect-Plan

Also, if you are doing a change or upgrade to the “Plus” Plan option, purchase your new Doorbell 3 after you have purchased the new “Plus” plan for your new location and this new Ring Doorbell 3 will be covered by the new plan at the new location, and give you the benefit of the 10% “Plus” Plan discount on its price.

Moving to a new location and taking your Stick-Up cam and if you already have a “Plus” Plan if the cam is already past its initial standard one-year warranty, this combination can be a little tricky, so you may prefer to call Ring Support directly for them to get the new “Plus” Plan without a lapse in coverage (and keeping the “Extended Warranty” in effect on your Stick-Up cam). So if you do indeed have a current “Plus” Plan, you should purchase the new “Plus” Plan for your new location first prior to any cancellation of the old “Plus” Plan . . . in order words, do not cancel the old “Plus” Plan first and then purchase new “Plus” Plan. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19, their available hours have been changed also:

As for your old Doorbell Pro that is remaining behind, be sure to release your “Ownership” of it by accomplishing the correct procedures, or else the people moving in will be unable to set it up to use it. You should release your “Ownership” before you change your location on your Ring account. In order to remove the owner from a device:

  • Open the Ring app.
  • Tap the three lines on the top left of the screen.
  • Tap Devices.
  • Select the device you wish to remove.
  • Tap Device Settings.
  • Tap General Settings.
  • Tap Remove This Device.

Once removed, your device’s video recordings and Event History will also be removed. Be sure to download any stored videos that you may want to keep before uninstalling the device.

You will also need to update your new location on you Ring account, or you can call Ring Support for them to help you with this too (both the location change, and new “Plus” Plan if you had a “Plus” Plan at your old location):

@carlidee You are very welcome. Glad to help!

But to be clear because you didn’t say whether you had the “Basic” or “Plus” (there are two types of Ring Protect plans), the Ring Protect Basic Plan (tied to individual device not location without Extended Warranty) and the Ring Protect Plus Plan (tied to all devices at one location with Extended Warranty). With “Plus” Plan, for extended warranty coverage to apply to your Ring device(s), the device(s) must be within its original warranty period when you subscribe to Ring Protect Plus. Once the original warranty expires, the device will be covered under Ring Protect Plus until you discontinue your subscription. That’s why I emphasized that if you are indeed on a “Plus” Plan (not Basic), for you to get a new “Plus” Plan for the new location before letting go (discontinuing) your old “Plus” plan (if your device is already past original one-year warranty), so you don’t have a lapse in extended warranty coverage. If your Stick-Up cam is still under the one-year warranty, then this won’t be an issue for you, as long as your new “Plus” plan is purchased before that one-year original warranty runs out.
