Powering a keypad through an old alarm cable

I have replaced an old alarm system with a ring system. I would like to install the keypads where the old keypads were. Can I use the Ethernet cable running from the old alarm and splice the ring adapter at both ends. If so which of the wires in the usb cable are being used?

would this help?

Thanks very much for locating that. I read through the description and it supplies data but not power. I will see if I can get a ring engineer to tell me which two or so wires from the Micro USB side of the cable need to transmit the power, but thank you for your effort finding that

I too recently replaced my old alarm panel and the keypads using the existing wires to power everything. I’m not taking credit for this approach (followed other’s examples here) - but it worked nicely. Fortunately, there was a single gang electrical box behind each keypad - for which the USB adapter fits in nicely.

For the keypads: I bought (1) USB adapter for each keypad: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RDGR9GF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Then I purchased (1) wall transformer to power both keypads:

This allows me to keep both of my keypads powered from the basement.

In addition, I ended up wall mounting my Ring Panel in the same location that I had a “siren”, and using the existing siren cable to power Ring Panel from the basement, with these adapters:

Hope this helps!

Thanks. Because the wires were not ending in a USB cable I wound up cutting the wire on the micro USB cable and manually splicing them into the old cat five wires that I had in the wall. It seems to work and carries the 5 V nicely. Thank you for all your help

This is exactly what I am trying to do. Having spliced the micro usb and connected to the cat 5 at the panel end, how did you connect the other end? Did you find out which cables carry the 5V power? Thanks

Actually the wire that I had going to the old alarm system was a 3 pair phone wire. I spliced the micro USB cable which only had two wires in it a red and a white one. I felt it didn’t matter which wire I connected the red and which I connected the white to as long as at the other end I connected the red and the whites the same way. I connected each wire to two of the strands And at the other end I connected the same two strands to the same wires plugged the Destiination into the back of the ring keypad and the origin to the ring transformer. Actually after I plugged it into the transformer I checked it with a voltmeter to make sure that I was getting exactly 5 V and the polarity was correct. As long as there’s nothing else on those wires and you’re consistent splicing the USB end and the micro USB end the red To the same color on both ends and the white to the same color on both ends it shouldn’t matter which ones you use as long as you know. I think for consistency consistency sake generally red and green are used for power or red and white if they have it in the cable that’s already in the wall. Good luck I hope this makes sense

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue that hopefully someone can help out with. I’m trying to use my existing hard wiring from my old alarm keypad to power the ring one. I’ve purchased one of the adapters on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RDGR9GF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but I must be doing something wrong. My existing cable has four wires - red, black, green, and white. The youtube video instructions had existing wiring of red, black, green and yellow rather than white. In the video the guy just capped the green/yellow together, and connected red to red and black to black, which is what I tried, and I capped the green/white together. I’m getting no power out of the end of the micro usb.

In my previous alarm, both the red and black were screwed into the keypad into a slot that was labeled 14VDC [+] (2) and both the green and white were screwed into a slot labeled 14VDC [-] (2) if that helps for extra context.

What am I doing wrong with the green and white wires? Thanks in advance!

Hello, have you tested the DCV at both the source and far end?

Hi there, neighbors! I wanted to chime in here and remind the Community that the Alarm Keypad should only be powered by a Micro USB as intended. We do not advise altering the Keypad in a way that is not by design, nor powering the Keypad with wiring or a method that is not Micro USB. Doing so can result in unintended operation, device damage, and will void warranty. Thank you!
