How it Works: Alarm Keypad (1st gen) Lights in Detail

Ring LED Color

Keypad State

White - solid for a few seconds

This indicates that the keypad rebooted. This can happen after an update, tapping the pinhole button on the back, or if the Keypad battery drained completely then powers back on after plugging in charging cable.

Alarming. If you have Ring Protect Plus and have signed up for professional monitoring, the monitoring center is being contacted.
(Click here to learn how the monitoring center responds to Ring Alarm.)

Red - four corners blinking

A command failed to send or was rejected. Most often occurs when an incorrect PIN is entered.

Yellow - four corners blink three times

One or more Contact Sensors need to be bypassed.

(Note, the ring LED is only used in Bypass when Power Save is off. See Bypass LED below.)

The Keypad has no connection and cannot communicate with the Base Station. We recommend updating your Keypad firmware to resolve this issue. Click here to learn how to update the firmware.

The battery icon will not be illuminated when the keypad is unplugged unless the Keypad battery is low (yellow) or very low (red).

Bypass LED

Keypad State

Yellow - on, and you hear “Sensors require bypass

After you’ve entered a valid PIN to arm the system, if there are sensors that must be bypassed in order to proceed with arming, the Keypad will display:

  • The “Check” button and LED ring will blink simultaneously and the voice prompt “Sensors require bypass” will be played.
  • When the user accepts ‘Bypass’ by pressing the “Check” button and the system will proceed with arming.

Power Saving Mode

Turn it On/Off in App - There is a toggle in the app in the Keypad settings page. From the menu, tap Devices, tap Alarm base Station, then Keypad. On the Device Details page, tap the gear icon in the corner.

There are a few subtle differences in behavior of the keypad based on setting this to On or Off.

  • Power Saving Mode Off - The Keypad will use a motion sensor to detect if you’re near it. When you are near the Keypad it will illuminate the Mode LED for the current state of the system (Armed Away, Armed Home, or Disarmed). If it is dark it will also turn on the number pad backlight.
  • Power Saving Mode On - The Keypad will disable its motion sensor to conserve battery. Meaning the mode buttons and number pad will not light up until you press a button. At that time, it will light the Mode LED for the current state of the system (Armed Away, Armed Home, or Disarmed).
