Device Tips: Battery Draining Quickly

Why is my battery draining so quickly?

 

If you have a Ring battery-powered device (e.g. Video Doorbell 2 or Spotlight Cam Battery) and it seems the battery is draining faster than normal, there are a few reasons that this may be happening. 

 

  • High Number of Events: The more events your battery-powered Ring device experiences the faster its battery will drain. Learn more about how motion events affect your battery in this Community article, here
  • Cold Weather: If you live in a location that hovers around 36°F (3°C) or lower, it is possible the cold weather is having an effect on your battery life of your lithium ion battery. Check out this article in the Ring Help Center about how cold weather can affect your battery.
  • Live Streaming: Any answered motion event can be watched for up to 10 minutes if you open the notification and watch the live view in the app. Streaming live view often can drain your battery faster as well.
  • Poor RSSI: In the Ring app you can see your devices signal strength (RSSI) under Device Health. If your devices RSSI is between -65 and -80 there may be too much interference between your Wi-FI router and device. This can cause your device to constantly struggle to maintain a connection. My Doorbell 2 battery  level does not appear accurately in the Ring app. The app shows continually 100%. Every week or so I receive an email from Ring telling me the battery is low, so I swap it out but it would be more convenient if the app itself could tell me rather than just say 100% even when the doorbell goes offline because the battery is dead...

Odd behavior, @palmatj . Sorry to hear you are experiencing this. Try charging your battery once more to 100%. If you still see this happening, please give our support team a call at 800-656-1918 to take a further look into this. Thank you!

I still see the issue. After recharging to 100%, I recieved an email from ring that my battery needs to be recharged but the app still says it is 100%. I will call the support number you listed

There are 3 lines, top left when you open the app. Click on devices then choose your device.

I have the ring doorbell 2. I have charged this doorbell a month ago and today is telling me that the battery is drained. I have this doorbell hardwire 24 hours a day and the battery is still draining quickly. Why is that? If it's hard wired. I would assume that the battery should not drain at all knowing that it's hard wired. Please, help me with this matter. Thank you.

If someone ever gets a response from Ring as to why the battery drains when the unit is hardwired, please let me know as well.  This seems to be a design flaw, and easily fixed with a software update.

Yes-- I am having the same problem with the Ring Video Doorbell 2 battery drain even when connected to existing 12 VAC doorbell wiring.  I noticed that there is a recommended replacement 16 VAC, 30 VA transformer that claims to solve this problem with the Ring Video Doorbell Pro-- but some comments on-line say may not work for the Ring Video Doorbell 2. Has anyone solved this problem?

My video doorbell 2 started draining the battery very fast this summer. I'm talking about like in 3 days. In december I ordered two new batteries from the Ring online shop and thought it would fix it. But it is still draining the battery in 3-4 days. My SSSI is around 55, I don't have live view enabled, and there are about 10 events per day.
I think it's quite clear that the problem does not involve the battery as I am using two new batteries.
