Serial number missing

I need for the Police the serial number of a stolen camera. Now I got told, that one can't get that, having not the camera (...stolen) oder the packaging (off course I safe all packagings of all goods received ;-)). So that I shall take the MAC address.. now the MAC address is not unique anymore and not accepted by the Police. Such is unacceptable!
